Subject: [STATE-COORD] Hurricane Fraud Alert
To: STATE-COORD-L(a)rootsweb.com
Especially for those in the Katrina-affected states:
I have received two emails from a fellow expressing a desire to "serve the
community" in two of "my" MS counties. He represents himself as an
experienced individual who has worked with FEMA previously in assisting
citizens fill out paper work, etc.
Naturally, I am convinced this fellow is a fraud. I have notified all our
CCs, and wanted to pass this on to LA and AL. You may want to alert your
CCs in case they receive similar notes. If you'd like to see the letter I
received from him, let me know and I'll forward it to you. He sent it as a
doc attachment.
I also updated our Katrina Links page
http://www.rootsweb.com/~msgenweb/survivors.htm
with pertinent information about fraud and who to contact. Will be adding
more this afternoon - all kinds of links for many things.
The best site I've found is the US Dept of Justice, which has a special
Katrina report online:
http://www.usdoj.gov/fraud.htm
You might also want to check out your state attny general web site and see
what's there. There are usually toll-free numbers to call.
It's a shame people like this come out of the woodwork in times of disaster
to prey on innocent and frightened victims. Don't ask me what I personally
think should be done with them - it's not pretty. Half of MS is
devastated, and we're still very concerned about one of our CCs, and also
some wonderful submitters living near the coast. Friends, relatives - we
all have them down there.
Thanks!
