As some of you may have noticed xxx & xxx have been off the air
and in limbo since last Wednesday (reasons below). As I mentioned
yesterday I am still hoping that xxx won't leave us so I have left
things sit but xxx hasn't been online and we have to worry about the
researchers right now.
If you link to these counties their temporary pages are at:
<SNIP>
The reason for the limbo is something that all of you folks who use
GenConnect have to read and pay close attention to!!
The short version is, if you use GenConnect DON'T go on vacation, get sick
or be offline long without asking someone to maintain your boards for you
or the people at GenConnect will take them away from you in a heartbeat and
you will never get them back. This is especially important for those of you
who are slow at taking care of your email, that has to stop if you use GC!
I can try but as this case proves I can't rescue you if I don't know there
is a problem and the folks at GenConnect will give your boards away without
giving me a chance to rescue them.
The long version is, Last Wednesday the folks at GenConnect took it upon
themselves to decide that xxxx wasn't maintaining her xxxx and
xxxx boards to their liking. According to them her admin notices were
bouncing and she never maintained the boards, even though she had just
cleaned them up the week before!! Big deal, someone bounces off of this
required list at least once a week, I give it a day or two and sign you
back on and all is well with the world. Bounce with GenConnect though or
be slow at maintaining things when a submitters mail bounces and you are
out of luck!!
I didn't find out about this until I received a notice from the GenConnect
orphan coordinator saying that xxxx's boards were available for
adoption. I immediately responded saying that I would take them all but it
was too late, they had already given the xxx boards away to someone
that has nothing to do with ILGW. After many email messages Nancy Trice
told me in no uncertain terms that xxx will not be allowed to have the
boards back. That night (Wednesday) xxxx and I sat in a chat room with
Pam who is the head of GenConnect but she can't do anything to
solve the problem either. The mail continued the next day and I now have
control of the xxx boards but for some reason, though I have asked a
number of times, they still havn't give me the one xxx Board that was
still an orphan the last time I checked, Biographies I think.
So, thats where we stand... xxx is very upset and angry because some
outsiders decided that they won't let her maintain her counties and she is
taking some time off to think about things. I am very upset and angry
because it is an ILGW decision on who is or isn't doing their job and NOT a
GenConnect decision!! These are ILGW boards and we should have been told
about any problem or offered the boards long before they were given away
BUT as Pam said in chat "we're not a USGW project." Combine that comment
with this recent turn of events and these folks obviously could care less
about USGW or ILGW and they will take your researchers queries, bios, obit
or whatever away from you if THEY decide you are not taking care of them
their way!!
This isn't a one time thing either folks, the same thing would have
happened with Terry's boards when she was offline for a month in the
fall if xxx didn't happen to be on IRC to catch wind that they were
going to take them away from Terry.
The moral is... If it isn't stored safe and sound on your county site,
don't trust that it will be there for you in the future.
