Derick has explained things very well, and he is understanding and seeing
where I am coming from and what I really meant in my emails to everyone.
Some things are often misinterpreted due to it being written words and you
can't hear inflections, understand how it is actually meant etc.
As to the issue of updating the sites every 90 days, some counties for
example Albemarle, Archdale, Dobbs, Tryon, etc are extinct counties and once
the databases have been transcribed there really isn't much more you can add
to the sites other than maybe a Brick Walls page, Recollections, etc. I do
understand that and respect that. Those counties do not fall into the update
every 90 days rulings because I do understand there is only so much that can
be found and placed on them.
As for other sites, even if you find a single lonely headstone in a field or
on the side of the road somewhere in the county and photograph it, go home
and transcribe it and put it on the site, that is new data and causes your
site to have been updated as well. Some other options are to transcribe
could be one of the Civil War Rosters, I have the set of NC Troops books and
when I get a chance I will be glad to transcribe a roster for you, give you
a regimental history to add, or even scan the pages and send them to you so
that can transcribe them if that is what you prefer. You can also go here:
http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/ click on Regiments then put in North
Carolina and it will give you a brief history of the unit as well as a
complete roster, all companies included. You can if you like extract one
company from these rosters every 3 months or so and there you have it new
info and the site is updated.
Add a new page for Brick Walls, then have researchers send in a brief
paragraph or so on a particular person or family that they are stuck on.
This helps to get the info out there, adds new data and updates the sites.
You can see an example of the Brick Wall idea here:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/duplin/brickwalls.htm
Also feel free to add pages like this to your sites:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/duplin/courthousefires.htm
Yes, you can use the info to post to any of the county sites. I compiled
that list from various sources and it has been extremely helpful to many
researchers.
Pages that have genealogical terms and their definitions is a great tool for
"newbie" researchers:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/duplin/genieterms.htm
Please feel free to use those as well on the sites, I compiled the list from
a variety of sources.
I also have a page called Remembrances:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/duplin/rememberances.htm
We have recently implemented this but as you see it is off to a good start.
I have also been asked to add a "Grandma's Cooking Corner" to the site. It
will include recipes that have been handed down in various families. No it
isn't exactly the type of research people are looking for but it gives you a
glimpse into the lives of our ancestors and what they ate, etc. The
researchers are truly excited to get this kicked off and started. They are
all digging out "Grandma's" recipes to send in to add. We are also going to
include "recipes" for poultices and other things as well to keep it
interesting.
So, as you see there are a variety of things you can do without transcribing
old records or reading microfilm. Also, please please remember I have
offered to help you get new material to add to the sites.
As for the deadlines on getting broken links finished, yes that was wishful
thinking and I realize those with larger sites will need more time. Some
people have emailed me and we have talked and I have no problem in each of
you letting me know when they are complete. If anyone needs me to run
another report I will be glad to do so.
I swear I am not hard to get along with and I will bend over backwards to
work with anyone. Just please give me a little benefit of the doubt, maybe
even a little break, and lets see if we can work together and help each
other to accomplish all of our goals.
Sue & Taneya,
Tina has forwarded a message from me to the EC Chair and the AB Reps to the
EC, hopefully this will get you your voting passwords. I haven't forgotten,
I have been sending emails to get them for you.
Thanks for listening once again,
Diane
