Are any of you familiar with a North Carolina Marriage Database that
used to be found at:
http://tn-3.rootsweb.com/~marce/ncarolina/index.html
I was wondering if it had moved to somewhere else. This link is no
longer working.
These records have been incorporated into a general database of
user-submitted marriage records on Rootsweb:
http://userdb.rootsweb.ancestry.com/marriages/
I ran across this a few weeks ago and recognized some records that I
had submitted to the old database myself. Among other things, I had
entered a lot of Quaker marriages from Guilford and Randolph counties
that weren't duplicated by marriage bond data.
This database was created by Marceline Beem in the late 1990s as a
special project for NCGenWeb. At the time she was employed by
RootsWeb and was able to use their server to develop it. In spring
2000 as we prepared for election of a new CC, the issue arose of
whether volunteers who hosted special projects should be allowed to
vote in NCGenWeb elections, and a couple of people were so hostile to
Marceline and to Carson Turner, who had done some of the military
pages, that they dropped out of NCGenWeb altogether. Marceline
removed the marriage project from NCGenWeb but the submitted records
remained on rootsweb as a separate database until recently. Frankly,
I doubt the current management of Ancestry has any idea of what the
history of this thing was. Somebody probably found it and salvaged
the data.
