Hello,
In inherited data about my 4x great grandfather, William Jackson, Sr.,
notes say he was "of _____Stanford of _______N. Carolina. Any clues what
this area or city might be? I am wondering if it should read
"Stanfield". Is there any area with the word Stanford in it?
Sorry, but that's all I have.
Sincerely,

Your 4x grandfather would probably have been living in the early 18th
century(?) There is a Burgaw, town and county seat, central Pender County.
When the county was formed in 1875 it was directed that the place chosen as
a county seat should be named Cowan, but an act of 1877 directed that it
should be named Stanford. Burgaw was chosen and an act of the General
Assembly of 1879 changed the name of "Stanford" to Burgaw and inc. the
town. --["Powell's Gazetteer" page 75]. My hunch is that this is not the
one
There is a Sanford, the county seat of Lee County. Trouble is, Sanford was
named for a gentleman who was living in 1872 so your 4x grandfather would
probably have pre-deceased the founding of the town.
There is also a Stanfield in Stanly county. It was incorporated in 1975.
Can anyone in this Project assist?
