John,
I thought I'd been here as long as anyone in NCGW, but 1886
definitely is before my day. :-)
I very much appreciate your comments and concerns. I, too, do not
care for micromanagement, and would neither propose nor support it.
That said, it's entirely possible we define micromanagement
differently. I'm not concerned with minor matters, rather with
"substantive" changes to content or location of our state web site.
By "substantive" changes, I mean moving our state web site to a new
domain without approval by the full membership. By "substantive"
changes in content, I mean something such as changing the page which
lists requirements for county sites, without approval of the full
membership.
I don't see this as a matter of "trust" or "distrust," rather as
a
matter of clarity, of "understanding" vs. "misunderstanding."
I would hope that our current - or any future - state coordinator
would welcome having a clear understanding of how the project
membership defines the scope of that office, particularly as regards
the responsibilities and authority for changes to our state web site.
Clarity can save a world of misunderstanding for everyone.
It's possible the majority of the current project membership may want
to change the way we've historically handled matters concerning our
state web site, and now assign complete autonomy to the SC to change
and/or move the site at his/her discretion, but I think we'd need to
vote before making that big of a change in the project. That change
would re-define our project from that of "bottom-up" to "top-down" in
structure.

Folks.
Every year or so, we, the CCs of the NCGenWeb, elect a SC who we trust
and give the power to maintain the NCGenWeb home pages. I believe
there
have been a number of changes since I became a CC in 1886. If Denise
wants to make some changes, I, for one, trust her to do what's
necessary. I don't have time to micro-mnage whatever she is doing or
what any other CC is doing on their sites. I have three county sites
which need constant maintainance and to which I am constantly
adding new
materials. My co-host, Kayy Lynn Sheppart, and I enjoy doing research
and sharing it with our researchers. To give our researchers what they
want and need, we don't have time, nor the inclination, to play
politics. It may well be that some CCs would rather send emails and
argue than improve their web sites.
I have faith in Denise, Nola and Paul to handle any problem with the
NCGenWeb home pages and if anytthing comes up which they feel needs
our
opinion, hhey will let us know. Until that time, I'll continue to
work
on my county sites and other historical sites, trusting those we have
elected.
Please excuse any grammarical errors as I have recently had caratact
surgery.
