Have any of the rest of you run across this phenomenon in the 1830
census - possibly other censuses as well ?
In 1830, in Granville County's "South Regiment," it appears that those
heads of household who have "free coloreds" in their household are
enumerated TWICE.
The enumerator does not seem to have used the columns for "free
coloreds" in the regular enumeration........ that enumeration seems only
to contain the "free white persons" and the "slaves."
BUT..... at the end of the pages, are additional 3 pages which list only
the name of the head of household and the ONLY columns marked are the
ones for "Free Colored Persons."
No names, except the head of household.....but the "free colored
persons" columns are filled-in.
At first I thought the heads of household listed WERE the names of the
"free colored" persons who headed those households, but now I don't
think so.
These SEEM to be the names of the "free white persons" who have "free
colored persons" in their households.
Why these weren't included in the first enumeration, rather are a
completely separate enumeration, I don't know.
I don't think this is the only example of this, however. I think it may
have happened at least one year up in Dinwiddie Co (or Petersburg City)
VA. I'll have to go back and check, because at the time I thought the
enumeration meant that person WAS, in fact, a "free colored." But now,
based upon what I'm seeing in the 1830 Granville, I'm not so sure.
(Mercy, I may have erroneously changed some races! <g>)
Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else has run into this in other
counties?
Thanks,
-Sandy
