Yep, I think you are right. It sounded like a good idea at the time.
One-way communication has killed the sense of family group for this
organization. If we have a member or two who is so disruptive as to force
us into this, then I say let's deal with them rather than shut down
communication.
The sense of family group was already severely damaged when we voted to
make this change in the list. A few people dominated the discussion on the
list, and a large number didn't want to listen to it, so tuned out
altogether and started tossing messages from NCGENWEB unread. They also
complained to the SC about the constant bickering and the volume of mail
that they didn't want to read. The DISCUSS list was intended to be a forum
where those who wanted to discuss, debate, chat, etc. could do so, leaving
the mandatory NCGENWEB list for essential communications about project
business.
Unless Sharon herself wants to reopen NCGENWEB to general discussion, I
think we should continue as we are now. We should encourage more
participation by CCs on the DISCUSS list rather than reverting to the
previous status. Managing a mandatory but open list can be a huge drain on
the SC's time, and I would like to spare Sharon this burden.
