Thank you for this heads-up, Derick.
I had completely misunderstood J Altenhoff's message and thought he
was uploading the information from the index for free online access.
His message was posted to my county list as well.
For those who may not know, the index to which J Altenhoff refers is
readily available via microfiche or film through LDS Family History
Centers, or can be ordered via NCArchives. (the fiche set includes 88
fiche).
The LDS center near me ordered the entire set which is, of course,
now permanently located at the FHC. (at 15-cents per fiche, that's
only $13.20 for the entire set....and _all_ fiche ordered from Salt
Lake remains permanently at the local FHC. Unlike films, fiche are
not returned to Salt Lake).
So far as I know, this is the index NC Archives created ca 1977, and
hence lists all bonds NCArchives had at that time. Notably absent
from the listings are GRANVILLE County marriage bonds. I think this
is because at that time, Granville County still retained its old
marriage bonds, having only turned them over to NC Archives more
recently.
As I'm sure we all know, the omission of Granville's bonds is a
significant one. The danger is always that someone may not realize
Granville's bonds are not represented, hence they may "assume" there
was no bond for which they are searching.
Further confusing the matter is the inclusion of a county code for
Granville, which results in the natural assumption that Granville's
bonds are included.
I only realized the omission after discovering any number of
Granville bonds which I already know exist are _not_ listed in the
index.
So double-beware.
Thank you again, Derick, for this headsup.

As a list owner, this is relevent to those that have county/region
lists. An individual, J. Altenhoff, has posted to my lists the
following offer of NC Marriage lookup. He charges $1.00 per page. I
have posted to him and to the lists as follows:

List readers,
Please bear in mind that this offer is a commercial (information for
a fee) service. Neither RootsWeb nor the USGW sanctions nor supports
any for-pay services on these for-free pages or lists. There is, in
fact a FREE search through NC marriages at:
