Derick,
I don't quite understand your message that Sharon forwarded
this morning regarding "violations". How is Yancey County involved?
Will you clarify for this "dumb oh me"? Thanks...

Hi Clint,
When the issue of the deep linking of NCGW sites first came up and the
involvelent of
www.familydiscovery.com became known, I tried to identify
all the sites that they illegally linked. One of these is:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4319/marriages.htm
As I check further, I find that it isn't your page but is the1850-1920
Yancey County Marriages which was posted by Harold and Doris Robinson at
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4319/index.html They also have a
link to you.
First of all, for those that aren't familiar with the episode, an outfit,
known as familydiscovery started a domain by that name. Their site is a
"fee-based" service similar in philosophy to
Ancestry.com. There the
similarity ends. They ask for a one-time fee of $49.95 for the subscription
and password. Fact is, their e-mail address doesn't exist, their address
(per Internic registry) is fictious and they have no intention to make
their page a going concern. They are active spammers and are trying to reap
as much money as they can before their connection is terminated. They have
never responded with a password and will not answer any mail. The phone
number listed is that of a carpet company in Des Moines who knows nothing
of this venture.
Another crusader, Gene Olsen, has been investigating this issue and is
keeping a log. Please see his page at:
http://gene_olson.tripod.com/Updates.html for all the details.
Until then, if your county has been deep linked by familydiscovery, I
suggest you write a letter to the provider,
Verio.com, and complain using
similar language to the complaint I made and copied the list for. You might
want to send Gene a copy for his records. gene_olson(a)hotmail.com
I, for one, would like to see this matter put behind us so that we can move on.
