The dash-marks on the Gaston, NC 1850 are tally marks by someone who
counted the males and females on each page probably long after the
census was recorded. The marks are not on every page, but when they are
there, they are always on the lines of the males. After going through
the first 20 pages, the tally-marks only appear to be on the unstamped
pages (B-pages).
The 2nd page in the census (page 391B) has one tally-mark missing (line
24 for 1-year old James D) and the tally at the bottom of the page for
males is one short.
