Below is a reply to Patrick Hayes who was complaining that the links to
Indiana had not been updated on the US map that is controlled by Brian
Leverich --Owner of RW. Brian's reply is below also.
My own personal comment is that I work very hard for the USGenWEb Project
too, but still some folks
(Board members) don't like me and and even go so far as to suggest I quit
the project.
Man o man, that's gratitude for you !! See, it happens to all of us great
and small. you just have to accept it and roll with the punches. Keep on
trucking and don't sweat the small stuff. It is every man's right to express
his own opinion.

I want to say one more small thing--Competition on the internet is what is
keeping the goodies Free.
When all competition is quashed, there will be no more freebies.

I'd like to address this letter a little obliquely.
I observe that Patrick Hays uses the Roots Surname List, is on the
announce list for various GenConnect boards, subscribes to various
lists here, and probably uses RootsWeb in various other ways.
I can find no indication he has ever contributed to the support of
RootsWeb. And he's complaining about the quality of our service.
There are names for people like that, and they aren't pleasant.
Right now RootsWeb doesn't have an admin covering the Web servers.
That's because we don't have the revenue to pay for one and nobody's
willing to do it as a volunteer. Nobody's willing to do it as a
volunteer in large part because everybody knows you can work your
tail end off for USGenWeb and get supportive "Just another reason I
don't like them." messages as a thank you.
Working on the CGI servers or the list servers is a lot more fun.
You get away from USGenWeb, and people seem to genuinely appreciate
what you do.
I'll go fix these links now. But if the Project wants more
responsive support, it might do well to consider whether "Just
another reason I don't like them." is the way it wants to say
thanks. -B
