I'm kind of curious if any of you are involved in some
of the DNA projects going around.
I keep getting invited to participate for my WOOD
(maiden name) line - but I don't know if there are
some scam artists out there, and how to tell who is
legitimate and such.
I'm the coordinator for HOLDER (my maiden name), had my son submit a
sample for HARRIS, and am peripherally involved in several others.
I'm finding that the projects are working very well, and that we are
getting new and interesting information that we wouldn't be able to
get otherwise. Family Tree DNA, the company most of these projects
are dealing with, seems to be thoroughly reputable, and I've found
their staff to be very helpful and responsive.
If you're concerned about security, you can submit a sample
essentially anonymously. For instance, instead of having your
brother, uncle or whoever give his own name, you order the kit for
him, and give the name of some earlier ancestor - say call it "John
Wood" or whatever, even though the person with that real name lived
150 years ago.
