Hi all,
Derick, You have brought up an excellent suggestion and I appreciate you
plugging NCGenWeb's Military Sites. I have worked hard on them and I am
continuing to gather information on other wars to eventually make a site for
each of them in which North Carolina participated in.
Since Derick's suggestion I have gone to all of the state sites from the
USGenWeb site and unfortunately the Mississippi site was down or the link is
wrong when I tried to go into it.
I have placed links to all USGenWeb state sites that have a military project
listed, (if I could find them) on the North Carolina Military site and the
USGenWeb is more than welcome to place a link to this page.
If you would like for me to maintain the page and not have it listed on the
NCGenWeb's Military site I can send the page and background to whomever
maintain's the USGenWeb site and they can upload the page directly to the
server and when I make additions or corrections I can send an updated page
to them so all they have to do is an upload instead of trying to maintain
the page as well.
If anyone that has a military project on their state site (that I don't have
listed as yet) would send me the link to theirs I will gladly add the link
to your site so that researchers will be able to find all of them in one
place.
You can find the list here:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncmil/statemillinks.htm
If you only have a specific war listed on your site, you can also send me
the link with which war it is specific to (IE: Civil War, Revolutionary War,
etc.) and I will add the link with a note that it is a war specific site.
Hopefully this will aid more researchers in finding information on all of
the state sites if they are linked from one main page.
Hope this helps....
Diane

Subject: [NCGENWEB-DISCUSS] USGenWeb Military Project-proposed
Dear MaryAlice and fellow Project members,
Many thanks for your reply, MaryAlice. It was the only one I had from
Any USGWP member.
While some folks think a Military Project, as you said, "would be a
Huge undertaking," I honestly believe it is merely an extension of
Each County Project's current coverage of genealogical and historical
Matters. A great many Project members have already included a
Separate Military Project within the scope of their current hosting
activities.
As I said before, our Diane Siniard has taken on the responsibility
Of creating a superior resource with the creation of the NCGenWeb
Project Military Project (
http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncmil/), in addition
To the 11 counties she currently hosts. From what I have seen, other
States in the Project have done likewise and I applaud their actions.
My original suggestion was that the national Project make the step
Toward formally recognizing this effort as an established USGenWeb
Project. If we can have a distinctive project like
<
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~usgwkidz/>The USGenWeb Kidz
Project, we should certainly recognize those states and counties who,
Without any formal direction or leadership, have developed sites that
Are both instructional and informative resources for those seeking
Information about their military ancestors. This would require little
Work on behalf of national. I would like to propose the establishment
Of such a project. I see but two things that would be required:
1. A commitment on behalf of the USGenWeb Project to recognize this
Project and erect a web page index to include existing state and/or
County sites.
2. The election or appointment of a national Military Project
Coordinator and webmaster.
I further propose that other existing military projects, such as the
<
http://usgwarchives.org/pensions/>Pension Project, and the listing
Of military cemeteries within the
<
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cemetery/military.HTML>Tombstone
Project become a part of any Military project.
As a US Navy veteran and CC for several counties, I have created
Military Project pages that provide the resources I have describe above.
I invite you to visit these sites to get a better idea of the kind of
information that can be shared with researchers as well as the scope
of the subject matter covered:
