Friends,
The recent activity that has resulted in moving many Project pages to
other servers has been a difficult task for many of us. With over
10,000 pages, most of which bore a logo thanking RootsWeb for their
support, this move was especially difficult for me. Like most folks,
I have appreciated RW for hosting my sites since 1996.
For those who are unfamiliar with the history of the RW/USGWP
affiliation, the history can be found at:
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~socgen/history.html
That said, I would like to offer my opinion for a project which I
find strangely missing from the USGenWeb Project's project page. I
searched through the various projects hosted by the USGenWeb. Among
those I saw were the
<
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~usgwkidz/>Kidz Project,
<
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~afamer/>African American Griots
Project and various <
http://usgwarchives.org/>Sub-Projects. Oddly, in
my search, I failed to find anything related to any military
projects. Knowing the historical, patriotic and genealogical
significance of a project of this nature, I thought perhaps I failed
to look in the right places. In spite of a detailed search, I was
unable to find a Project-supported focus on our military, from the
pre-Colonial wars to the current action in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Fortunately, we in the North Carolina GenWeb Project have been
blessed to have Diane Sinard to spearhead our NCGenWeb Project
Military pages which can found at
http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncmil/.
Diane, in addition to her duties as page host to eleven NC counties,
has done a magnificent job creating and maintaining the NCGenWeb
Military Project.
If a USGenWeb Military Project pages exists and I have been remiss in
locating it, I apologize. If a nationwide Military Project does not
exist, it is certainly incumbent upon Project leadership to
inaugurate one. Without this resource, we are much poorer as a
genealogical and historical resource on the web. If help is needed,
North Carolina will be happy to lead the way as we have done in the past.
