Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The main Moore County page is at
http://www.mindspring.com/~mooregen/
Click on "site map" and you will go to a page
(http://www.mindspring.com/~mooregen/sitemap.htm) that has a list titled
Moore County People, Places and History.
The 5th item in the list is Moore County Wills. Clicking on that takes you
to the page I cited before,
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/9783/willA.html . I did not
realize that, at that point, I had moved from mindspring to geocities.
Maybe that is the explanation. I am sure there is one that I am missing.
But now that I am looking at it again, most of the links in that long list
go to geocities/9783. Except for this page:
http://www.mindspring.com/~mooregen/familybooks1.htm of which this is an
example:
Births and Deaths Records Moore County and related counties Mid 1700's to
mid 1800's $10.00/disk
Marriage Records of Moore County mid 1700's to early 1900's $10.00/disk
You really can't tell what is NCGenWeb and what is not. If this is all
right with the rest of the membership, then it is all right with me. I
still don't understand how a link to Dale Deason's personal semi-commercial
page escalated to his resignation and this is okay. Just trying to sort all
this out. I agree with Angie:

I don't see a problem in linking to commercial sites, or giving people a
way to contact paid researchers, and such. But I have to admit that this
here kind of bothers me -- partly because for most of us, I think the term
lookup implies more of a free favor than a paid service. This page looks
too much like the rest of the site, and doesn't seem to show a distinction

I, frankly, never understood the problem with Dale Deason putting up a link
to his personal page on which he asked for contributions to his family
association. But when a regular user of my site asked me about Moore County
NCGenWeb charging $10 for wills, well, that is a questionable policy, even
to me so I thought I'd better ask.
See http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/9783/willA.html :
To order a will simply e-mail LookUp of Moore County, and let them know

Well, it isn't a lawsuit, but I have removed all links from my site
to SurnameWeb. The owner of SurnameWeb (and www.AccessGenealogy.com)
is Dennis Partridge <partridge(a)knology.net>
I just flat don't like what he's done with the java.
It's designed to keep people from easily moving through the link to
the other sites. Period.

As a footnote to my post..
As time goes on and more and more people are learning to set up their own
web sites, web pages and designs are becoming more "territorial" and people
find ways to either keep you captive, force a bookmark on you, or attempt to
prevent you from looking and stealing code by locking your browser up after
right clicking your mouse.
It is all part of change in this ever increasing dog-eat-dog, impatient,
selfish, disposable society we now live in. It even carries over to web
sites.

Sandy,
You have found the piece of code that makes the new window act that way.
With anything "new" everyone who designs web pages wants to incorporate the
latest trends into their own sites. There are many corporate sites that now
use this type of new window showing a minimum of tools at the top. They
believe this opens up the page more so you can get a better view of the site
without all the clutter and less scrolling. Some even turn off everything
to a "full screen" in which the only way to get out of that is to close it
using [Ctl] W.
As for counteracting this type of JavaScript, I am afraid the only way to
make it go away is to turn off the JavaScript within your browser itself.
But then you will be limiting yourself tremendously when it comes to
visiting other sites and can become a pain just to turn it off for this one
web site!
That's the best I can suggest.

It seems to me that it is past time for NCGenWeb to take legal action against
these recurring misuses. Understanding that copyright issues when
considering genealogical data is complicated at best - the issue of
"intelectual property" when discussing a web page is not complicated at all.
If you create a page and it appears on another server as someone elses work,
then the infringement is obvious -- even better with the issue of web
creation is that each party has the date of creation of a file on their
server for public view. Of more concern is the theft of bandwidth which
linking a page into a frame creates.
I say, don't threaten the offender with reporting to ISP, web host, or
lawsuits -- simply go to your local magistrate, pay the fee, and file a suit
against them. Infringing a copyright by mistake in good faith is one thing
-- stealing content is wholly another.
just my opinion - for what it is worth
Carson
Okay, so I've looked at the "View: Source" on that first surname web
surname page....
and just look at this javascript they've got in it.....
--------
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!-- Begin
function Start(page) {
OpenWin = this.open(page, "CtrlWindow",
"toolbar=yes,menubar=no,location=no,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes");
}
// End -->
</SCRIPT>

NOW......is there ANYthing we can do on *our* end to counteract that,
i.e. keep it from working??
Thanks,
Sandy
>
All of you who know something about frames, java, and other nasty
little "tricks"...<g>...
Would you please explain to me WHAT Surname Web is now doing and what
- if anything - can be done to combat this??
I don't know if this is a problem only in Netscape (I have 4.7 for
Mac)....or if it's universal for everyone....
but Surname Web is somehow disabling part of your browser when you
click on any link they have listed for a surname.
My Netscape shows they are using some sort of javascript....
To see what I mean, please try this:
Go to a surname on SurnameWeb.... http://www.surnameweb.com/
(for example, you can go to the Hoyle page at:
http://www.surnameweb.com/registry/h/o/y/hoyle.shtml
Then, under "Hoyle Genealogy Web Sites", click on the link for
"View the Listing"
this starts up a javascript:
javascript:Start('http://www.accessgenealogy.com/data/h/oy/hoyle')
and opens up a separate window...BUT, this window *disables* part of
your browser (makes part of it just disappear!!)
...i.e., the browswer does not show the url of the page, and you
CANNOT operate the "back" button, etc....and there are no "menu"
items up top in the browser except for "File" (options of 'close' or
'quit') and "Help". The normal "Edit" "View" "Go" "Bookmarks" etc.
are ALL MISSING.
When you click on any of the page links to other sites, they show up
in THAT browser window with the same problem - you can use the "back"
button to go back to that SurnameWeb page, but you still cannot see
the url that you're on, none of your browswer's menu bar features
show up, and basically, you're TRAPPED at SurnameWeb!?????
Now is there ANY way to combat this?
I hate to say it, but this truly seems to me to be the most "devious"
case of capturing someone else's pages I've witnessed to date.
I REALLY don't like this, but I don't understand this stuff enough to
know what can possibly be done to combat it.
Thanks for any help with this,

Welcome to NCGenWeb, Heather. I hope you are enjoying getting your county going. If you need help or have any questions, just let us know.
I keep a brief bio/sketch of everybody and which counties they do on a page at
http://www.betterthanmost.com/wayne/ncgenweb/coordinator.htm I hope you will tell us something about yourself that I can post on the page, and so we can get to know you.
There is also a coordinator's help page on Sandy's Vance Co. site. I can't find the url right now ... will somebody help and supply that.
Thanks,
Diana F.
I just heard from Horace in a private e-mail stating that he removed the links and information on his web site but the code in question was within a page in which he use an old template that contained the code. An oversight??... maybe... but I have been out of the loop to know the exchanges that took place between Sharon and Horace and if things transpired in a timely fashion so can't (and won't) comment further until I know all the facts.

People may not read the meta tags, but depending on what search engine they
use, they may end up on his page because of them. And I pulled up his page
in the last 5 minutes -- it is still most definitely titled NCGENWEB Home
Page. No matter how you rationalize it, or what you think of anyone else's
actions, his page *isn't* the NCGW home page.
I can't speak for Sharon (and she's quite capable of speaking for herself),
but for me, the problem is not one thing that's been done. It's the
accumulation of things, starting with the very fact that, despite a vote to
the contrary, the domain was purchased with the express intention of having
NCGW use it according to Horace's conditions.
No matter which side of an issue someone is on, maybe it should send up a
red flag to have a member say, "I don't care what the vote was. If the
vote doesn't go my way, I can ignore it." If we're going to behave like
that, there's no reason to discuss by-laws, or take votes, or even to
consider ourselves a group. It's anarchy. And while I don't think
removing anyone from the project is something to be lightly, maybe it's
about time we start keeping something in mind -- in the real world, you can
do whatever you darned well, but at a risk. There are consequences for our
actions, and sanctions for our behavior.
I don't think it's something that should be put to a vote, but if it were,
I'd stand with Sharon.
Angie
Terria and ALL,
First of all, Terria, you don't have the priviledge of having read every exchange
I have had with Horace over this. There have been many private messages and some
have had things said in them that hasn't made it to the discuss list. Some of
those things were also used in coming to the decision I made.
As for Horace losing his sites because of the one word, "name", that's hardly the
truth. If the message is read closely, you will see that yes, I did ask him to
change that wording. It didn't seem that he intended to do so. THEN I checked
the META tags for that page, which are included in my message. The message
one gets when reading those META tags is very clear and in my opinion, are defiant
and contrary to the attitude I believe our CCs should have. That was the last
straw on a camel that was already carrying a large load.
Also, my desire not to be heavy handed does not mean that I can't be if the need
arises.
As far as whether this situation with Horace should have come to a vote or not.
I inquired on a level above me and was told that it was my call, and that
ultimately it was my responsibility. That communication happened a couple of
weeks ago. Ultimately, I did what I felt was the best for the NCGENWEB Project
as a whole.
I'm sorry you are not pleased, we all now know that and would like not hearing
it again, over and over.
Sincerely,
Sharon Williamson
NCGENWEB SC
