Hi, I agree with Joan on the "verbage"...put it in straight talk. I am
subscribed to the
USGENWEB-DISCUSS-L(a)rootsweb.com
Here are a couple of suggestions I agreed with from there.
1. " You have the option of establishing your website on any server. The state and
county sites within USGenWeb are hosted by a variety of servers, most of them free of
charge. There are several servers that offer free email lists and are used by many
'"
My suggestions:
A. I -- (JoAnn did this because in 1989 the rootsweb servers were REALLY slow, I
remember getting up at 3:00 a.m. to up load to the web site. I got sick of that fast as I
was working "during the day." So I found my own domain name and server and have
been happy with that.
B. A friendly welcome and even a suggestion of help "somewhere" should be on
the front page.
I have been on web sites in other states that says no research help because they have a
full time job or too busy literally...don't e-mail them, what is on the page is all
they know etc.etc..
C. When Corky was SC she had us put an "Updated" date on the front page, that
page was updated Feb. 12, 2006 for instance. She asked in a nice way...to change the date
each month.
She also had a roll call ...I can't remember how often. We knew she was there and
she knew we were doing the best we could at the time. We were to let her know if we were
traveling and away from our computers in case she needed to contact us. I am so happy
Nathan is SC because he stays in contact and that means so much to CC's.
D. I would like to address the "verbage" issue again, I have been trying to get
some more volunteers and the last place I would show them would be that huge page of
"must do"...I can teach someone how to get started etc and it seems to me if we
had a condensed list for them to start with it would not look so intimidating. I saw some
web sites at rootsweb I didn't know existed and they would be very helpful.
E. Some volunteers are so afraid of photos...how to resize and get them ready for their
web site. I haven't seen anything on help about that but maybe I missed it. I can
volunteer for that if there is a need.
Thanks for listening, Jo Ann Boyd Scott
