Thanks Karen,
If the problem is corrected, then maybe it was a lot less work than
changing the laws?
But-- I still see no example, nor even explanation of why they linked
elsewhere--
What reason do the "violators" give? Is it nonsense, or some
valuable reason? If nonsense, and they are willful jerks, more rules
will likely only complicate things for every one and make more
bickering. If we have people sabotaging the organization, we need to
face that fact-- not pander to endless rule-making. If we are
required to waste much effort keeping the organization free of
saboteurs, we might just as well disband and do our work
independently. With the internet, all one needs to do is search for
a few key words. Let word spread what key words to ensure we have on
the our websites, and we can be found. (even if under handed-- this
is no longer a an approved GenWeb site :-)
On the other hand, if the problem was coordinators trying to enforce
something (rule or guideline) is the problem actually the "force"
part? We can not expect volunteers, creating their own stuff so as
to coordinate and fit in with the world, to cotton to being forced.
Coordinate is much different than enforce. When we are forced to do
things we think are dumb or ugly or stupid, we are out of here. It's
real easy to change the name on the website. (In our case, we have
the local genealogy society website to absorb all the data anyhow.
Anyone willing could make their own. :-)
If someone truly wants to help provide free genealogy, why would they
not respond to ideas or suggestions to improve their site, provided
the advantages and reasons are explained? Rules won't fix ignorance,
nor apathy, nor poor taste, nor unresponsive people. If they are so
abominable they are intolerable and are doing more disservice than
service, then it would seem the State coordinator would have to
unlink them from the hierarchy.
So what are we missing out on?

I just sent an email that does explain the why a little bit.
Apparently there were some sites that were linked to non-USGW sites
but in the last couple of days those have been corrected. And yes,
the perpetrators of the mislinking were told time and again to change
them plus their SCs did not enforce the guideline apparently because
it was a guideline. Under those circumstances I can see why they want
to make it a rule. It is just too bad that a few bad apples always
spoil the barrel.
I believe the server is working but now that you mention it, I don't
recall receiving a new PW. Anyone else? I will see if the newest PW
works before I start yelling at someone.
Thanks much Ben!
