Hi all,
From the emails I get, it appears it's been a busy year for
everyone!
We're still getting additions to the archives weekly... thanks in
large
part to several of you who seem to have dedicated your time to helping fill
the archives with great data for researchers. I want to extend my
heartfelt thanks to you!!
After my surgery in March, a 9 day trip to Boise in April and working for
the Census 2000 for the past 3 1/2 weeks, I don't know whether I am coming
or going. I just finished with the Census this a.m., in fact, when I
decided I didn't want to work in the next phase... re-contacting refusals.
Some people were downright hostile during the "non-respondant" phase in
which I worked, and I'm not up for that kind of contact every day, all day!
<G> I may return to work for them in July, depending upon my trips,
etc., but that will be another 'mop up' of new addresses, etc.
Many of you have noticed on the MONTANA-L list that there's a new group out
there called "GenExchange". The woman who heads the Montana site answers
questions on that list and her very long signature 'advertises' the new
project with each post she makes. That's certainly fair since the list is
maintained by MSGS, not us. I was not familiar with the people involved
in that project so wrote to the State Coord. list.... apparently it is
started nationally by someone who also is a CC for a county with USGenWeb.
I guess I fail to understand why someone would want to waste their energies
in duplicating this project and it's format..... it seems that researchers
now have to research in hundreds of places and adding another one doesn't
help. Whatever, their site is attractive and well-designed. We'll just
have to see what happens with them.
At any rate, I would encourage each of you to try to make it a goal to add
one more index or data transcription to the USGenWeb Project Archives for
your county this summer. Montana is holding it's own with our Archived
data and I don't want us to fall behind. Maybe this little bit of friendly
competition from another group will spur some of us on!!
Hope all of you have a great summer... God bless!
