Something else about some servers that might explain a few of the "strange
happenings" that you've been having. When you transfer files, so servers
will not make the "new" files live until after you exit your FTP program.
If you are going through a proxy server, then you are NOT getting live
files. You are getting copies of the files from the proxy server.
Depending on your proxy server, those files may take 4 hours to refresh.
Browsers have their on cache too. Sometimes you are getting a copy of the
page from your hard drive, instead of from the server. Pressing the refresh
or Reload key can help this. Holding the shift key and clicking on Reload
(in Netscape only) forces the browser to get a fresh copy of the files. If
you don't think something is right, the best thing to do is to exit your
browser and reopen it.
I don't know if rootsweb does this, but you might also be looking at a
mirrored copy of the site. Sites that get a lot of hits will "mirror" their
site. You never know what computer you are "really" on. These servers then
"replicate" their directories to each other to ensure they have the same
data. Depending on their settings, it is possible that it could take an
hour or more to replicate the data. They are probably set up to do it as
soon as it detects a change in a file. Depending on how much you (and
others) are changing, it could take several minutes to replicate to the
other server(s). Again, I do not know if Rootsweb does this or not. I'd
expect geocities to do it though.
