Hi everyone,
Thanks to Cleve Kimmel, our Yellowstone Co. MTGenWeb Project Coordinator,
the 1880 Montana census transcriptions are now alphabetized and online.
Bear in mind that these were all submitted to the USGenWeb Archives;
however, they have to be proofed by comparing them to the microfilms. This
is taking a long time, and will probably take a lot more! We thought it
would be nice to at least get an index online - even if there are errors in
transcription - so that people could do ancestral searches.
It was a big job for Cleve to take the number of county transcriptions and
combine them in alphabetical order - especially since some formatting was a
bit different. In addition, Cleve did some great research about that
census and included it on the site.
Custer county did not get transcribed and the transcriber is in the process
of mailing the sheets back to me, hopefully!
Part of Lewis & Clark is not included in the index, and for the time being
will not be able to be completed. Even without those names, I'm so
pleased to have these up and online for people to use.
The URL now is
http://www.rootsweb.com/~mtyellow/census1880/census-list.htm
The listing at this site is a full one which includes ALL of the columns in
the original census. They can only be viewed if you have MS Excel,
however. You can, Cleve says, go to
<
http://www.rocketdownload.com/Details/File/excelvwr.htm>Rocket Dowload if
you want and download an Excel viewer. If you can't, or don't want to do
that, there is a very 'condensed' version of his work in the MTGenWeb
Project Archives. There you will find simply the Name, Age, Line and
Page#, County and Township.
Thanks, Cleve, for all of your hard work.
The 1890, by the way, shouldn't be too much longer.
Corky
