Well, guess what? I just got the last disk of the 1890 census back two
weeks ago! <G> It has been coming back in bits and pieces from several
people who just got swamped with other things, I guess. When we first
started this 1890 transcription, the USGenWeb didn't want it because it
didn't fit the form they used for the other censuses. Apparently, they now
have a place for it. Anyway, I have to get in touch with Tina to see if
she wants it as is, or if I should just combine the thing and put it up as
an index for people to use. I'm thinking that the latter may be the way to
go for now, unless Tina is willing to take it without proofing it. I'd
rather see it up there, even with errors, for people to use.... the proofed
copy can be put up later.
I'm also going to do that with the 1880. I just got the rest of it back
(except for Lewis & Clark which will now not be getting done as the
transcriber skipped off and is no longer at her address, phone, or
email!!). Maggie has over half of it and has sent it to proofers to
compare all of the transcriptions with the original film. I'm sending her
the final ones next week. It sounds as if it will be months before that
proofing gets done, so again it seems that it will be best to "save as" an
index copy, add a place name column to each one, combine and sort them A-Z
without all of the details. That way, people will have an ability to know
their ancestor was here, anyway. I won't be getting at that too quickly as
it is a big job. If anyone has any suggestions on how to combine them
quickly, let me know. Remember, the place name is at the top of each list
of names, not in a column alongside the name. Confused? That makes two
of us.
I had no idea this whole process would take this long. I believe it's
been over several years on the 1890.
