Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Corky Knebel created that logo and why can't we use anything that says
MTGenWeb or MTGenWeb project? That is a huge picture there and looks more
like a mastehead than a logo? Let me know as soon as you can.
Thanks much,
Karen

Well, it has a copyright notice in the lower left-hand corner that says
"Corky Kidd" (do I have the spelling right?)

I received the following message from Allison Stanhope Wyrick this evening.
If your county is listed in her message, please remove the logo from your website immediately.
My Custer County has had the logo on it since before I took it over in 2009 but I will remove it tonight.
Another good reason we need an official logo we can use without worrying about it being pulled.
We still need submissions for the MTGenWeb logo so please be creative and submit your designs by Saturday (banner submissions, too).

Since the logo must say MTGenWeb, I think the banner should not. However, it can say any of the things you suggested or anything else that is synonymous with Montana. Or a comination. Maybe "Montana - the Big Sky State" under a mural of iconic Montana images. But I am sure you and others can come up with a banner much better than anything I could suggest. <g>

Suzanne, why don't you message me privately with your county parameters. For example the mining and mountains and what color scheme you would like to use. I seem to recall each of your counties has a special color scheme?
I will have a block of time tomorrow afternoon to play artist. LOL

Work up a banner or 2 and place them on your samples page. <g>

Ooh good idea! And even more food for thought, if you want a county banner, I would be happy to make one for you! I had too much fun doing the sample logos and would be happy to customize a county banner for you as well, just drop me a line!

Whoops, thought my earlier response went to the list. The map is up on the
sample logo page so everyone can look at it and see if they want to try and
use it for our logo. It sure is pretty.

Subject: [MTGEN] Compliance with USGenWeb Regulations
Good morning,
have been looking around the MTGenWeb and have found several non-compliant
ssues on the state and county websites.
he USGenWeb gives specific formatting of the name to be used
or state projects: XXGenWeb.
ontana's official project name is MTGenWeb. This format should be used in all
eference to the project, logos, text, etc.
he state site now has a logo that reads "Montana GenWeb" and I am working on
hanging that to one with the appropriate formatting. Several county sites also
ave incorrect formatting in several different forms. We are not allowed to use
he term "GenWeb" alone nor can MTGenWeb be in all capital letters. The MTGenWeb
oes not have an official logo though there are several that are quite nice and
re correctly formatted that may be used. Logos that are not compliant must be
emoved.
ll variations of the official project name must be corrected within the next 30
ays. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

While the official name of the project is MTGenWeb, there is nothing that says the full name of the state can't be used along with MTGenWeb in a state logo.

Subject: [MTGEN] Maybe we are taking the logo too literally
Hi everyone.
Let's not get our panties in a twist over the whether it is The Montana GenWeb Project or The MTGenweb Project in our logo. <grin> As long as we have a logo that we like and that does not confuse anyone. Remember - some of our visitors are foreigners and don't necessarily understand the abbreviations. I just poked around and the following states have the full state name. Some have the state name spelled out and also abbreviated. Here are the states that use the full state name in one way or another: AK, CA, DE, DC, HI, MN, OH, ND, RI, TN, UT and WI.
I handle The Alaska GenWeb Project so I'm one of the guilty parties. I get many inquiries from people living in Russia, Norway, Sweden and Finland. They don't need the extra confusion - especially the Russians who are alphabet-challenged in their ancestor search.
Personally I love the current Montana logo with the Native American. It is very striking.

Finally got the page online and did add a little commentary. I think an
official logo should be closer to a square than a long rectangle in general
shape. I think I will take a look at some of the other states logos, at
least the ones that have one and see what other aspects we might want to
consider. Honestly if I can do these someone surely can whip something
better up. My brother is too busy right now to work his graphic magic but
he will fine tune ideas if we come up with an idea that needs to spit out
of a computer. LOL

The responses I received on whether to have an official logo or not were unanimous in favor of the idea. The majority said yes to including the current logos which are compliant.
Submissions to be considered for the MTGenWeb Project official logo must have the correct format of the project name somewhere on the logo (MTGenWeb). Other than that, unleash your creativity and start designing a logo. All submissions must be sent to me or placed on your website and a link posted to the mail list by midnight next Saturday, February 25th.

Hello Everyone,
I played around with a couple things last night and made two logos for
fun. If you want I can post them to maybe help generate ideas. I don't
think either one is good enough to be our official logo but it might give
someone else more capable an idea or two. Shirley, where do you want me to
post those if people would like to see them? I really would like a logo in
the state shape if someone can help me figure it out.

I vote to move the state site to Judy's server due to all the problems we
have had.
I would prefer to keep the state site as mtgenweb.org domain name,
since if it changes to .com I will have to change all my links. I
currently have Daniels & Sheridan County hosted at Rootsweb, so I
won't need to move the county sites. Thankfully!
