Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Great, John,
I think a way to avoid the problem of the .htm v .html
would be to advertise the url simply as:
<http://www.montanagenweb.com>
because the automatic response of browsers is to look
for any of several default files at the location to load--
the ones I remember are, index and default, which can have
either file name extensions of .htm or .html are equivalent.
By not specifying in the URL, any are transparently accepted.
That said, the name portrayed by the URL:
<http://www.montanagenweb.com>
would seem to indicate a commercial alternate to
<http://www.mtgenweb.org>
It feels a bit rude to say so now that the domain name is obviously
acquired and working, but something more like:
Cascade-MTGenWeb.org
would be more descriptive.
I think going through the state website is the simplest
way to maintain organization and unity, when it gets going.
Then the address to advertise would be through
<http://www.mtgenweb.org>
(possibly http://www.mtgenweb.org/~cascade/ as
the mt portion is not necessary since it won't be on
rootsweb server, it will be Montana at the start point)
and a redirect, which can be made automatic--
(write me for example or see rootsweb.com/~mtbeaver/)
can then refer to any place implemented.
I seem to recall the guidelines of naming to be that the counties
official name was to be on the pattern that would render a name
BeaverheadGenWeb, CascadeGenWeb, etc.
The obvious lack is that the name does not directly indicate
what State it is part of. Perhaps we should find the
official guidelines and be guided by them (or alter them
to our present needs?) so that in this time of transition
we maintain unity of purpose and direction and not
dwindle into chaos and confusion.
Anyone familiar with the guidelines?
(in simple form)

The first link in your email doesn't work, John, apparently because the link is to a page titled index.htm, but your home page is actually index.html -- http://www.montanagenweb.com/index.html .

Greetings All,
I wish to say a "Thank You" to Vikki Gray for her dedication and
expertise with the counties she had been Coordinator for. She has
reluctantly resigned being coordinator for Lewis and Clark, Madison
and Mineral. She will remain CC for Missoula County.
Additionally, we have other Counties we need volunteers for. If you
would like to take over one of the orphans, please contact me right away.
Also, it appears that Mary Boyer has come up missing for
Musselshell. Has anyone had contact with her? Her email is bouncing
and I have had no luck making contact.

I am able to create the pages for the Ravalli County site, and easily upload them via rootsweb.com/fileman. I don't want anything more complicated than this. Before I found the rootsweb.com/fileman to upload, I had uploading software which was extremely cumbersome and too aggravating to deal with, so I dumped it. With all of the changes proposed, how will I be affected?

I don't want to speak for the State Coordinator, Nancy, but I don't think you're required to move your site if you don't want to. I believe his intent is to offer space to those who WANT to move. In his last message Kevin stated twice that the offer was for those who wish to move.
I have always understood that County Coordinators are free to host their sites where they please so long as the State Coordinator has the correct address to list in the county directory - otherwise, I would never have felt free to yank mine as I did. So I believe you can stay where you are without any issues.

Well, the apple cart is upset, and there are growing pains--
but don't despair. As Jim Petermann has demonstrated,
you can just put up a redirect to any new location
(with or without the $15 domain name 'trick')
and then by attrition things will work out.
By the way, we looked at:
<http://www.rootsweb.com>
and the only way we could see to find the county
GenWeb sites was that there is a link there to USGenWeb.
under the heading "Hosted Volunteer Projects".
It would seem more direct to send folks to the
relevant level of GenWeb (World, US, MT)...
Unless of course, you want them to get familiar
with all the offerings at Ancestry.com. :-)

I'd be interested in transferring the Granite County web site. I have
no interest in being an advertising stooge for Ancestry. As an IT
security professional, I've seen a lot of cases where the type of banner
advertising they are planning on doing be corrupted and used for
nefarious purposes.

I am the go-to person in our county for Nearly All genealogical
queries, and have business cards with the URLs I use.
I refer people to rootsweb all the time, telling people they can get to
any county by going there. That was the simple beauty of their hosting
Gen Web, to me, since I also have a job etc, and it's all volunteering
and it can get to be time consuming to help novices.
I think the commercial angle is pervasive anyway, and whether its a
banner or a squarish rectangle on the page, it is the same, they want
the right to get people to the place where they can buy a subscription.
But soon everyone realizes that it is too expensive to keep up.

I've moved the Wibaux county site to a subweb of another site under my control.
The old address http://rootsweb.com/~mtwibaux will be there as long as rootsweb leaves it up, and they can put all the advertising they want on it.
I left a "moved" sign with the new address http://www.WibauxMTGenWeb.org and as far as I'm concerned, that takes care of the problem.
I'm not going to bother raising any issues with Rootsweb, since the Wibaux County mailing list is still there and we do get a couple of postings a month, so I'll just let well enough alone.
I'm going back to sleep, now. I'm too old for all this excitement...

Wibaux County
Kevin,
Sounds great, if I understand:
You have server space available to which you plan
to copy the present rootsweb postings in order
to avoid any association with Ancestry.com
at the Montana level? (MTGenWeb and all willing counties)
Is this server space your personal account with your ISP?
Or is it something already belonging to MTGenWeb?
Thus, any county pages presently on the rootsweb server
will be duplicated on yours, and the links will then be
pointing to your own server instead of the old rootsweb server?
Thus, BeaverheadGenWeb postings will be replicated such that
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~mtgenweb/>
would be superseded or made obsolete by:
<http://MTGenWeb.org/~mtbeaver/>
Will your server support the same counter calls, etc.?
And last, but not least, is it possible to alter the capitalization
to make it easier to read, recognize, and be more proper?
MTGenWeb.org
Oops, when I type it, and press enter, browser changed to all to
lower case letters anyhow! :-) And it redirects to the same old:
<http://www.rootsweb.com/~mtgenweb/>
Which does nothing to avoid Ancestry.com, if I understand correctly...
EXCEPT, I gather you are preparing to have the redirect flipped
so that it would NOT be pointing to rootsweb server?
I'm just a bit fluttered by the registered domain names because
I've never actually bought one-- too frugal, and still have in
my head they cost a bundle and required annual service fees.
Maybe we need to be disabused of old notions?
