The reason for the 72 dpi number is that used to be the standard
display on a Mac. 96 dpi is standard for Windows displays. So if you
scan a picture at 72 dpi, you guarantee that every viewer will see it
at close to its original size.

The McAfee home page at www.mcafee.com is offering online scans for anyone who
suspects they may be infected. You can sign up for a 14 day free trial of their
clinic and the scan is part of the 14 day trial. They also released the name of
other variants of the virus. Their statement says by 3pm yesterday they had
discovered the other 2.

Patti,
Thank you for sharing with us. It's most difficult to lose a Father I know,
and losing a brother-in-law at the same time certainly adds much more grief.
My thoughts and prayers are extended to your and your Mother and husband during
this time of grief and adjustment. May God bring you His perfect peace and
hold you in His Arms.

I have been pretty sporadic with my counties and emails this past
month, and so I thought it easiest to post to everyone at once.
My Dad passed away on Apr 13th, and following 2 weeks in Ohio with
my Mom and family, the day I returned to Miles City, my brother-in-law
unexpectedly passed away at age 45. I was only home a day or two, then
off to CA to attend his funeral. I have just returned, and am now
finally attending to my emails. I apologize for the delays. I will be
leaving again near the end of May for two weeks to move my Mom to Miles
City, and then things should be back to normal-- whatever that is!
Sorry to post to the entire list, but it seemed much easier. I
promise to catch up with everyone as soon as possible.

I've just received Tom Stout's three-volume set "Montana Its Story and
Biography: A History of Aboriginal and Territorial Montana and Three
Decades of Statehood", copyright 1921. Is anyone in the process of
indexing this biographical set? If not, I'll begin working on indexing
it for the MTGenWeb Archives.

Hi,
I don't think I've passed this on as I have not opened any; however, my Son
called us here at his home from work (Micron) and told us to not open any email
with subject "I LOVE YOU". He got about 100 of them this a.m.!
I talked to my daughter in Billings right after that and she said that my Son-In-Law
had phoned her from Computers Unlimited and said that the server they operate
(imt.net) was completely infected this a.m.
Evidently it is just an email propulgation thing, but what a pain.
I can't get on the Symantec site this a.m. to check it out or whether they have
the updated protection for it yet. The site isn't coming up. Maybe the virus
detection program site has been hit! <G>
So... don't open any email with I LOVE YOU in the subject line.
Corky
McAfee Virus Scan have information on their site, but no solution as
of the time I checked this morning.

I usually don't make any photos available on any of my or my clients'
sites in any higher resolution than 72 or 96 dpi. That way they
display fine on the monitor, but they're basically useless for any
commercial print media. It's not a perfect solution, but at least any
copyright thief is going to have to work a lot harder to make anything
out of what they've copied.

As a computer techie, I just wanted to mention that there is NO way that you
can lock down a photo on the web so that it can't be copied if someone feels
like it. Even if you pull out a couple of fancy programming tricks to keep
them from right clicking on the pic and saving it. The photo is displayed on
your PC monitor, which means that you can ALWAYS hit Alt Printscreen and then
paste it into a new file as a bitmap. That is reality.
So I see 4 choices here:
1. Hire lawyers and detectives to track down anyone who copies a photo off
of the web. $$$$$
2. Shut down all the web sites that have images on them. Ridiculous!
3. Pull the pic in question off the site - although it has already been
copied. But this would keep any remaining cows in the barn.
4. Accept that this can happen and get over it. St. John's Wort can help
the process. :)
It is no different than a book in a library. Someone can ALWAYS xerox a
page, or the whole darn book - if they feel like it. So either don't post
the photo in the book or be prepared that this could happen. By the way,
Internet Service Providers are not responsible for what passes through, under
or over their servers and trunk lines - they are treated just like the phone
company. So Rootsweb won't be able to help you. AOL would not even respond
to a demand to stop someone from right-clicking. I can't even get AOL to
filter porno out of my mailbox.
Just my two cents worth.
