Syble and John -
We are not affected at all.
We're The MSGenWeb Project, The USGenWeb Project, etc., not GenWeb. The
USGenWeb Board earlier authorized a committee, complete with attorney, to apply
for a Service Mark in the names USGenWeb and USGenWeb project, which would
extend to XXGenWeb Project wherein XX represents a state.
To verify nothing has changed recently, I checked with Rich Howland, IL SC, who
served on the USGW Board with me until this spring. He replied:
"The application process has been completed. The PTO has acknowledged receipt,
assigned a processing number, and we're awaiting their decision. With the
check sent to our attorney on 1 June 2001, all fees have been paid. Final
accounting can be viewed at:
http://home.kscable.com/jschunk/servicemark.html"
Additionally, it's important to distinguish individual county sites from the
USGenWeb Project. All CCs own their own sites. It's yours, your copyright,
and you are simply linked to the project.
Were USGenWeb to fail tomorrow (which it won't), there are other projects out
there to take its place. A good example is AHGP, where I have a MS State page
and some counties up. Another one is ALHN, and so on.
As long as there are volunteers willing to work to put MS data online, and to
help researchers, there will be a place for us.

It is not a rumor: go to
