I sent Clare some info, also, on slave census and Mortality Schedule. This
was for Alabama, but it may apply in Virginia, also.

Another possibilty will be to look into Wills. Many times a slave was given
to a family member and they had to list the name of the slave. Also, what
about the papers that finally granted the freedom, can't spell the word so
I'm not even going to try :)

Unfortunately, the slave schedules do not list the names of the slaves.
The
master is listed and the slaves are enumerated by sex, and age.
You may be able to make a referential reference if, in fact the slave
maintained the slaveholders surname.
