Lori has the right idea. Many sites will link to our counties. Some of
those will be "deep links," which means the link is to a file other than
the index/home page. I always encourage everyone to properly identify
every file.
Recommended for each file:
MSGW Logo w/link to index page of either county or MSGW.
Title for page including county name/w link to index page
Pertinent copyright information
Link to your name/e-mail ID
Within the html coding (meta tags, etc):
Title
Author
Description
Keywords
Some linking sites open your page within their frame. Notorious for this
is the Mining Company, aka
about.com
A typical URL will look like:
http://webclipart.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.paradisea
waits.com/PCGraphics.html
You see the hosting frame,
about.com. Then you see the content is offsite,
then finally, you see the URL for the site they're linking to. If a
visitor doesn't understand URLs, he will never know where he is, or if he
does he may not know how to get out of the frames. So if you really want
to play it safe, there are a couple of things you can do:
Place a "break out of frames" link on every file.
Type out the URL of your page, e.g. You are here:
http://www..........etc,
and link to it.
Lately, due to lovely parasites like
Discovery.com, I've seen a lot of
pages crop up with, "If you arrived here via a paid service, you've been
ripped off."
Re LDS, for years they've made a ton of valuable information available to
everyone at no charge, or minimal charge. I believe they are searching the
net and linking to other free sites in order to help people, and for no
other reason. This is not a bad thing! The researchers potentially find new
information; you get new visitors. All you have to do is prepare your
site for it.

I went to
familysearch.org and went under the research (education) or
whatever it is called section. Then I clicked "web sites" and searched on
the word "Tippah". First hit from Tippah County USGenweb site is a Terry
Diary. There is a link to
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/missi.html
which would include Tippah. Looks like they've included lots of things from
the USGenweb project.
I've made a little "logo" for Itawamba County that I put on each page.
That
way they always know where they are - no matter which page they end up on
first. They can click on the logo to go to the home page. I personally
don't have a problem with others linking to my site. It generates traffic.
I have the copyright notice on each page so folks can see that.
