It seems to be in the North part of the state but I am not sure where this
fellow is researching. A researcher is posting to MSGEN county lists for
a "roll call" of surnames. This is a common practice by listowners to
pickup traffic on lists and to help new list members find others
researching the same surnames. However, this guy is asking that surnames
be sent to him privately so it will not "disrupt" the list. Which is a bit
unusual. He goes on to list rules that people must follow when sending so
that he can "cut and paste" into a spreadsheet that he will alphabetize and
send to the list on a certain date. He then states there can be no
corrections after that because he is moving on to another list.
I think "roll calls" are stupid and unnecessary and should not be allowed All
counties should have a surname list with email addresses for those researching that name.
Let them put their surnames on THAT list and not generate hundreds of unnecessary
messages. People then respond to the individual who posted their surnames on the list
instead of privately the way they should. The guy just did this on the Tippah county
list. While he did ask that the names be sent to him privately people are to dumb to
change the to address and post the surnames to the list anyway. The next time there is a
"roll call" on any list I am on I will unsubscribe from it at least for a couple
of weeks. I would just as soon have spam (which makes up more than half of my mail now
anyway) than all those unnecessary messages. What happened on the Tippah list is that one
guy suggested he was collecting the email addresses to spam them (which is quite
possible). Then others started taking up for him. MORE unnecessary mail!
Don't allow "roll calls". Tell them to use the surname list.
