Normally, I wouldn't be posting in an official capacity on this list.
Tim, please forgive me for posting the following message.
Hello Everyone,
Updated regarding the New Message Boards:
o We've increased the message boards web servers from 5 to 10
which should help with the increase of users as the day continues.
o Search stability is being addressed. We will have more stability
by this evening.
What you really want to know:
o We are merging three different message board systems into one.
o We combined GenConnect's seven boards into one.
o We ask for your patience as we resolve issues. This will take a
few days.
o Message Boards are not in their final organizational heirarchy.
- We will be moving boards;
- URLS that works yesterday, may not work today.
URLs that worked an hour ago, may not work this minute.
o Your feedback is important!
- Feel free to email vicki(a)rootsweb.com with your comments;
- Post them to the RootsWeb HelpDesk
<http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help.cgi>.
What is new:
o Posters can globally change their email addresses.
o Users can search all of your stat boards at one time.
o Users can search your entire county at one time.
o Your message boards can be and still will be gatewayed to the
"paired" mailing list.
o Admin's can set up a page with info and links back to the county
sites!
Reporting bugs:

Hi all,
The URL that takes you to the Mississippi County URLs as an ADMIN is
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=admin.board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.
usa.states.mississippi.counties&maxrows=25&dir=next
Please note that it is a LONG url. You have to be registered to access the
system from this URL. Once you register and get there, click on your
paricular county. There should then be an option if you haven't already
done it to "Become and Admin".
The URL that visitors would use to view the boards would be
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.st
ates.mississippi.counties&maxrows=25&dir=next
You can jump arround to different counties by typing the count name (all
lower case) after the world counties in the URL for example to access the
Jefferson Davis county board you would type .jeffersondavis after the world
counties in the URL counties.jeffersondavis
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.st
ates.mississippi.counties.jeffersondavis&maxrows=25&dir=next
Hope that helps you all out some - that's what I've learned from playing
around with it.

Hello everyone:
I've been patiently reading these messages, trying to figure out how to
claim my boards without having to ask for help here, but I don't think it's
happening...
When I used the URL that's been posted here, it wants me to login with my
current Ancestry.com account login and password. When I do that, I go to
the Message Boards Admin Center page. If I click on Admin Center, I am
taken to the Search/Find a Board page. Nothing on this page has anything to
do with the boards I am supposed to be adminning... and if I search for the
boards I am supposed to be adminning, all it does is go to the message
headers for that board.
I have no idea about any "profile" I used on GenConnect. All I ever
remember having is a password to use the Admin's Utility pages. I don't
ever remember having any kind of login name. And if I use my real name and
the Admin Utility password, it won't login like that.
And I obviously am not on the Boards-Admins-L list, either, since hearing
you all talk about it here is the first time I ever even heard of it.
So am I supposed to log in with my current Ancestry.com account info, find
the boards I am supposed to be adminning, and volunteer to adopt them, or
what?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Ken,
First - did you have the query board on GenConnect? The admin of
that board has first dibs on the whole thing. If you did - read on....
Go back to Montgomery County board - login - and note the URL
in the address block - That portion "?htx=admin.board" (no quotes)
does it have "admin. where I show it here? If not, type it in there, and
that will take you to the admin board.
Then, right under the county name, you see "List Messages" then just
to the right of that, you see a link that says "Become an Admin". Click
that and see if you can claim it that way.
If, by some chance, you are already the admin of the board, you will
see "You are admin of this board" just to the right of the county name.
If not, it will tell you "You are not the admin" (in so many words). If
you
suspect you have the incorrect username/password, you can go to
password central on RW and it will tell you (might email it to you) what
passwords you have on all RW activities.
Good luck,
Ken Hollingsworth

Hello Everette,
I just looked at your Attala Co, MS message board. As of 1 minute ago, "no
one" is listed as Board Admin for your Attala Co, MS message board.
What you MUST do in order to claim your board is go back in with your
password to your Attala County board then click on the link that I believe is
called "Links & Announcements".
Once on the "Links and Announcements" page, you should see a box with a
Welcome message with your name and e-mail address listed.
Look "outside" the box, at the "bottom" of that box. There is a place for
you to click on "Submit". DON'T do anything on that page except click on
"Submit". Once you click on the "Submit" button, you've succeeded in
claiming your board.
You can go back anytime..... (hours, days, weeks) AFTER you have clicked on
"Submit" and change the message in the box to suit your fancy.
mona Newton Co, MS GenWeb Project
Everette,
I was getting this same message when I tried to claim my boards. I
kept entering my user name and password; then clicked the button that I had
forgotten my password. I was sent a message to choose a new password.
I used the same old password and then was able to get into the
admin of the boards. Apparently, the user name and password I have always
used on my GenConnect boards was transferred when they merged everything;
but it had to have my password set up again as a new password.
Once into the admin part; I find NO place where you can do any
actual editing...like deleting a duplicate; adding spaces in the posts to
make them more readable or placing the surnames in all caps.
That was the one feature on GenConnect that I liked. When time
permitted, one could go in and do a little editing and have the posts
pretty uniform...not some in all caps, some in all lower case, no spacing, etc.

Jackie,
Go to your board - login as admin - choose the duplicate and open it.
Above and below the message area you will find a few links, one of which
is Delete Message. It doesn't actually delete it, but puts it in the
recycle
bin, where you can restore it if you make a mistake. At this point, to what
I understand, admins cannot empty the recycle bin - they remain there
forever.
As for editing the message - we're not allowed to do that anylonger.
The
answer given by Ancestry now - is to delete it and tell the poster to
re-post
using the proper punctuation - no caps, etc. Expect to get some flack on
this
should you ever try it. Many people who use ALL CAPS, I have found, do so
because they have poor vision. I generally just let it go.
Ok, now I have a question - if you follow the Boards-Admins list, you
noticed
today that Rootslady (Barbara Dore) posted an idea that is great, IMO. On
our
websites, we can link the boards to the URL of the county in a certain
fasion, and
it will automagically open the Admin Board for that board. This gives us a
bit of
control, letting the users know that the board is hosted by a USGenWeb
volunteer.
I would think we could/should create a board to our own liking, with the
logos
and whatever else would be appropriate to announce the USGenWeb/MSGenWeb's
presence, since some of the boards might not be hosted by a CC.
Take a look at Barbara's board at
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?f=viewboard&r=rw&p=Localities.northam.usa.
states.Texas.Counties.Sabine
she doesn't have the logos there, but it would be a nice improvement if it
is allowed.
Watch out if that URL wraps on you - may have to copy / paste each line
individually.
Ellen - would that be acceptable to Ancestry? Would the USGenWeb allow
that
association to Ancestry? Oh well, guess I actually had two questions. ;-)

Everette,
It doesn't appear that Attala has been claimed by anyone as yet. Did
you admin the Query board for Attala? If you did, it should be open to
you only at this point. Did you use the profile you used on GenConnect?
Got to be the same here. Contact them about getting it set up. Are you
subscribed to the Boards-Admins-L? If not, something isn't right. The
folks who admined the GenConnect Query boards were automatically
subscribed to it.

ok........ did you "claim" your boards "from the git go" or are you just now
trying to claim those boards?
If you claimed them, got conformation, and all that, and "the page
disappeared", as mine did: Somehow get back to the query board....you will
have to sign in, I believe?
When the query board pops up, look at the URL. Somewhere in all that
jibberish the word "board" is gonna appear. Insert "admin." infront of the
"board" so that it will read "admin.board" and then hit your "enter" key or
however you go to another URL.... if you have already been accepted as the
admin of that board, you will be taken to the admin site where it will tell
you "you are the administrator of this board."
Once you get there, put it in your "favorites" or "bookmark"......makes it
easier down the line.
Good luck, it worked for me.
