Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Nate,
I appologize for confusing you with the wrong name, Joe. Not sure
where I came up with that name. Again, I'm sorry.
But, the same questions will still apply, as previously posted.
I guess, that if I had dug a little, I would have known your position on
the archives, as you give on your election bio at
http://www.pa-roots.com/nate/election/ in article #5.
As I understand your position, you would favor each county handling it's
own and separate archiving operation? Since we, as CCs, have the leeway
to house our sites on any server, and assuming those county-run archives
would
be on the same server with our HTML sites, just how would you propose that
a search engine be implemented to search those sites? As I've stated for
about 5 years now, I think the Archives should be in one multi-tiered
website,
in a digital-library, for the purposes of searching.
That aside, I do agree with you that the leaders of our Special Projects and
the
Archives, with their "my way or the hiway" attitude, as you put it, should
be
elected, not appointed for life. Would you support some kind of change in
the
by-laws to accomodate that idea? I know this SC position wouldn't likely
afford
you the venue to facilitate those changes in the By-Laws, but your position
on
these issues would be most interesting for my part.
Again, sorry for the confusion on the name.
Ken Hollingsworth
Due to recent discoveries, I feel the need for a few explanations from
our candidates. Again, please post to this list for all to benefit.
Being a past Archives FM for MS, I have first-hand knowledge that
Ellen Pack is anti-archives. Ellen, feel free to speak to that if you feel
the need. I sincerely hope your position has changed.
With that in mind, I need to know from Joe Zipfel about a few things -
1- Joe, do you, or do you not, own a server named PA-Roots?
IF not - do you own the domain of the same name?
2- Joe, from the sampling I took, am I safe in assuming that all of your
counties (that you CC) are located on that server? Realizing that
CCs aren't obligated to house our counties on any particular server, I
find
no fault for that, if you do.
3- However, depending on your personal involvement in that server, should
you
answer yes to #1, I have the following questions that seem to require
some
explaining to secure my vote. To the extent you feel obligated to
answer for
the purposes of these questions, feel free to do so. I am not trying to
pry into
your personal affairs of business, but feel that we, as the MSGenWeb
need
to know what to expect should we elect you as our SC. Better now than
after the fact, when removal will not be as easy as voting you in.
a. Are you running an archiving operation on that server, in what would
appear
to be a competitive effort with the USGWarch?
b. Correct me if I'm wrong - but it appears that even though you have
one hyper
link to the USGWarch, for the counties you host on PA-Roots, it
would also
appear that you not only have archiving operations for those same
counties,
the "Home" page for PA-Roots offers archives for all counties in PA.
Right or wrong?
c. As observed, the sites have banner ads - Who receives the revenue for
those?
The CC? or the server (PA-Roots)?
d. And, finally (for now at least) should we elect you, can we expect
the same
competitive archiving for MS? While I was given (by available
linking) the
opportunity to submit data, I did not find a choice to make of the
location of
that data, on PA-Roots, or USGenWeb. Am I wrong?
In closing, Joe, I make no attack on you personally. I have no reason
to doubt that
your intentions are grand. But, I just feel the need to know, and would
rather you
answer than go by hearsay. What say ye?
Ken Hollingsworth
(maxed out at 6 counties in the MSGenWeb due to a "rule" that I haven't seen
in
print)
For the benefit of those among us who don't do IRC, Chat, nor otherwise have
access
(by choice in my situation) to the candidates, I would like to ask a couple
of questions
of our candidates for SC, and make a comment on the ongoing USGenWeb
National
Election.
Comment - It's too bad that MSGenWeb doesn't have an SC in place, nor will
it by the
deadline, to nominate for the SE/MA SC Representative seat on the USGenWeb
AB.
As it stands right now, there are no nominations. The three that were
nominated have
declined according to the USGenWeb EC website. Deadlines for nominations
are
July 18, and our election won't be until after that. Oh well - such is
life, right?
Questions - Would our two candidates for SC of MSGenWeb please respond to
this list -
1- What is your position on our ongoing debate over the USGenWeb Census
Project?
2-Should both projects be conjoined into one Project, or remain as they are
now, two
separate projects, both claiming to be the Census Project?
3-What would your position be on National-level leaders of our special
projects,
including those Census Projects, the Archives (USGwArch), Tombstone,
etc. -
should those positions be elected on a yearly /bi-yearly basis?
Thanks for your time in helping me with some decisions on how to vote -
obviously, you can see where my concerns lay. Feel free to expand in any
direction.

Hello,
You are receiving this message because an email, which contained
your email address as the return / reply-to address, was sent to
hahaha(a)sexyfun.net. This is a list of possible reasons why you received
this message.
1) You sent an email to hahaha(a)sexyfun.net to request, complain or
notify
this user that they are SPAMMING, sending an email with a virus,
sending an email that has content that may not be appropriate for
minors, to be removed from a mailing list, etc..
2) Someone else sent an email to hahaha(a)sexyfun.net and they are using
your email address as their return / reply-to address. If this is
the case we are sorry that this email was sent to you but please
do read it as it does contain information about a virus that is
spreading around the Internet that we are trying to stop / slow
down.
3) You may already be infected with the computer virus for which this
email is trying to inform you of. This virus (W32.Hybris.gen)
will send a copy of itself to the reply-to address of any incoming
emails that a infected computer receives. So when you received
another copy of the "SPAM" that this virus sends out from another
infected computer, the virus sends a copy of itself to
hahaha(a)sexyfun.net since hahaha(a)sexyfun.net is the reply-to address
of the "SPAM" the virus sends out.
4) Your anti-virus software sent an email back to hahaha(a)sexyfun.net to
inform them that the email they sent to you contains a virus. Most
of the time this email is sent without you knowing by the anti-virus
software itself.
5) Someone has subscribed the email address hahaha(a)sexyfun.net to a
mailing
that you do subscribe to. Our program that sends out this message
tries
to make sure that it is not responding to any emails that it
receives
from a list server by checking the full email headers for list
information. Some lists do not provide any keys in their full email
headers that we can use to keep the our program from responding. If
you
think this is the case please contact your list admin and have them
remove hahaha(a)sexyfun.net from their member list. Thanks.
6) The above 5 reasons are the most common but their could be others. In
any case this auto responder message is only triggered when an email
is
sent to hahaha(a)sexyfun.net and that email contains your email
address
as the return / reply-to address. Do note that our auto responder
should
only send this message once to any given email address.
The truth about this "SPAM" that contains Snowwhite in the Subject,
is
that a virus called W32.Hybris.gen sends out these emails with
attachments
that are also infected with this virus from an already infected computer
in hopes to infect more computers. The Hybris.gen virus will use the
computers it infects to collect email addresses by sniffing Internet
traffic to and from the infected computer. It will then send a copy of
the
Snowwhite email to the email addresses it has collected. These emails
the
virus sends out use a fake / spoofed FROM: address of hahaha(a)sexyfun.net
to hide its origin.
We registered the domain sexyfun.net 3-4 months after the Hybris.gen
virus was first discovered in order to setup a web site and provide the
people of the Internet information about this virus as well as tips on
how
to detect, clean, trace and protect yourself from this virus, etc...
Here is a list of other facts that may answer some of your questions
that you may have already.
1) We do NOT maintain any mailing lists on our system.
2) This user (hahaha) does NOT exist on our system.
3) The email that you got with the From: field of hahaha(a)sexyfun.net
did NOT come from sexyfun.net, the hosting company (slowmoe.com) or
the network that our servers sit on. This email address was
FAKED / SPOOFED.
4) The email you got is in FACT a way for the (W95.Hybris.gen) virus
to spread itself around the world / Internet like the ILOVEYOU
virus of a few months past.
5) If you would look at the Received: line of the FULL email header, it
will tell you the real IP / Computer name that has sent you this
virus, which is most likely someone you know that is infected with
the virus and is not aware of it.
6) The owner of the domain sexyfun.net and the hosting company
(slowmoe.com) has setup a help page with information about the
(W95.Hybris.gen) virus, links to software that you can use to clean
your computer if you are infected as well as other misc. information.
7) We did NOT create the virus or know who the person is that created
the virus. We are NOT affiliated with this person / persons and the
same applies to our hosting company.
NOTE: As long as you don't run / open / double click on the attachment
of this email, this virus should not be able to infect you just
by reading the email.
Here are links to well known companies of anti-virus products that
will show that what has been said above is true.

Please forward to your CCs:
IMPORTANT MESSAGE BOARDS IMPROVEMENTS
You have probably heard about the new message board changes coming about
in
the next days and weeks. Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com will be releasing
a
new integrated message board system that is a combination of two
powerful
message board systems (i.e., GenConnect and FamilyHistory.com). Users
will
be able to take advantage of a much larger community in which to share
experience, tips, and genealogical information. Users will be able to
access
these new message boards on either RootsWeb.com or Ancestry.com, and
message board access will remain free on both sites.
We expect the new system to be more stable and have more features.
Improvements include the following:
--- The new message boards database will be by far the largest
collection of
such messages on the Internet. In fact, the FamilyHistory and RootsWeb
messages are extremely complimentary. The majority of the messages on
FamilyHistory are surname-based, while RootsWeb's strength is in the
locality and topic areas. Not only will the new combination enjoy a
larger
set of data, but users will have access to a much larger audience.
--- The new message boards can now handle attachments to e-mail messages
in
the form of uploaded pictures (scanned documents, family photos, etc.)
and
GEDCOM files.
--- Users will be able to view the e-mail address of message authors and
be
able to respond to them easily and privately. However, the message
boards
cannot be "crawled" by unscrupulous third parties to gather e-mail
addresses
for spam mailings.
--- Search functionality will be improved compared to either the
RootsWeb or
FamilyHistory systems. Search hits will be ranked by relevance and
wildcard
searches are available.
--- The hardware infrastructure supporting the new message boards is
faster,
can handle larger traffic loads, and is more stable. The new system is
also
less expensive over time and easier to maintain.
The boards, however, will definitely be a change. One specific concern
we
have is with existing hyperlinks to the old GenConnect system. We
believe we
will be able to redirect most of the traffic to the proper destinations
in
the new system, however there may be some adjustment required by
USGenWeb
SCs and CCs. USGW CCs will still be able to use the new message board
system
for their query requirements for XXGenWeb's. Actually, we hope that we
have
preserved the important features
and conveniences from GenConnect as well as added a few new bells and
whistles. It is important to us that these new boards continue to serve
the
needs of the USGenWeb users.
We will be working hard to help you learn about the features of the new
system so that they can continue to function as important research
tools.
Please help us by being communicative yet patient as we launch the new
system. For now you can direct questions/suggestions to
vicki(a)rootsweb.com
Pretty cool project.

FYI from another list.
WASHINGTON - June 11, 2001 - More than 20,000 community newspapers, some
long
out of print, have recorded American life since the 17th century and two
unique
organizations have set the common goal of providing Internet access to
this
documentation of American heritage. The National Newspaper Association
(NNA)
and Cold North Wind Corporation signed a letter of intent today to
create
America's Chronicles SM, an online search engine that accesses the
digital
archives of America's community newspapers, beginning with the archives
of the
3600 NNA member newspapers. The project could eventually result in
500,000,000
pages of original, historical content dating back to the 1600s and will
be
available online at http://www.americaschronicles.com . The site will be
launched at the NNA's 116th Annual Convention and Trade Show in
Milwaukee,
September 12-15, with access to the first of many digital archives.

Hi all!
I received this email yesterday and wonder if any of you
have the answer?
Keely
Dear Keely: For three years I've been trying to get someone
to tell me about RACE catagories on the 1860 MS Census,
Noxubee Co. This census lists three race catagories A, B,
C, but does not designate what they mean. Do
you have the answer or can you direct me to someone who
does?
Hi all,
I've been asked to post a little bit more about me since most of you have
never had any interaction with me so you don't know anything about me. The
following is a part of what I posted a week or so ago.
"Do I host a county? No, the counties that I'm interested in have always
been
hosted when I've checked so I've been a "lurker" to the project. I lived in
Harrison county for 12 years. I worked in Hancock county for a while in Bay
Saint Louis. Survived a hurricane and a few tropical storms. My kids were
both born there (Biloxi).
Fell in love with Natchez - great place for you all to visit during the
Spring Pilgrimage. My wife and I absolutely loved it there. Some wonderful
antebellum homes there! Awesome experience.
We were fortunate to visit many areas of the state and grew to love the
places and people of the state. We have a great many friends throughout the
state. If you ask my kids where home is they'll say MS and they are teens
now....
I have a great fondness for the state and the great history that is there.
My desire to help others in their quest for their roots!"
I'm currently a candidate for the NE/NC State Coordinator Representative to
the USGenWeb Project Advisory Board. You can visit my page I set up to read
a little more about me. It is located at
http://www.pa-roots.com/nate/election/
To extract a few things I wrote on my election page that are applicable to
the MSGenWeb.
1 - First and foremost, I view the County websites as the heart and soul of
this project. You the county coordinators are the most important members of
this project. I believe that the bulk of the energy of this project should
be directed to encouraging, supporting and providing resources to our County
Coordinators.
2 - This is a hobby, it's not a job, it's not a kingdom builder adventure.
We are all volunteers and as such I will not regard myself as more important
than someone else in this project no matter the position they hold or that I
hold.
3 - I see my role as a State Coordinator as that of a facilitator. For me
to be successful as a State Coordinator I must see that the County
Coordinators are successful in their particular counties. I attempt to be
available to assist and to provide resources to enable the County
Coordinator to do his or her job. I try in everyway possible to avoid any
type of superiority stand or dictatorial position with the county hosts.
If elected as the State Coordinator, you'll find that I don't meddle with
your sites. I do check to make sure the minimum requirements are being met
on your pages. I typically visit twice a year to give you some feedback and
suggestions. I think you'll find me a guy that you can come to with
questions or issues and I'll gladly lend a hand.
My goal is to see you all successful in your county sites!
I appreciate your consideration as you consider your choice for the new
State Coordinator.

I'm pleased to announce that the "Cemeteries of Madison Co., MS" by Walter
W. "Pat" Wellington is now completely online at the Madison Co., MS website:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~msmadiso/cemetery/cemindex.htm
and also in the USGenWeb Archives at:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ms/madison/cemeteries/
There is a two phase search engine, one that searches the archive files
which will allow researchers to view all the listings included in a single
cemetery. The other, a cemetery database housed at Rootsweb which will
also allow researchers to post further information on the individuals they
are researching.
I want to especially thank Pat for offering his database freely for the use
of all researchers. This is the same database which was used to publish
his book of the same name. I also want to thank Mardi Kelly, our MS
Tombstone Project coordinator who processed all 195 cemetery files and
uploaded them to the server. We couldn't have done it without her.

Hello,
I sent this out before and never got an answer so can anyone provide me
with a contact email or name or ? that might be able to answer the
question. A quick look at the Copiah query board indicates that some of
them (maybe all) appear to be there but ???
Bob
Hello All,
Did we restore ALL of the 'lost' queries, obits, etc. that happened during
one of the GenConnect system upgrades? I never heard. The notifications on
the boards are gone but ???
Bob from Copiah
Hi all,
Well the nominee's for State Coordinator haven't changed so now is the

maybe both can attend chat on irc this Thursday night. Voting will

I'm checking into vote-bot and if we can use it I think it would be the
best way.

Dear Debbie, Jackie, Shirley, Ellen et al,
I am one of those who has sat on the sidelines for years hardly ever
responding, but when I have ask you for information, you have been most
gracious. Ellen, Belinda, Jackie and Shirley have all been nice to me
when I needed help. I am sure if I ask anyone else they helped. I love
Pontotoc County. I have been on the mail list and found a new ancestor
after not having a new one for over 15 years. Is that not good enough
to stay. :) Jackie takes care of Chickasaw County and Jackie and I have
found out everything is not always rosey with everything for everybody.
Sometimes, I think I don't want to stay in the Chickasaw County Gen/His
Society when people get nitpickey, but I would be missing something that
I enjoy most in life. I do appreciate all the work on the Genweb. I
found the Bible of my GG Grandmother's from Shirley's site. Ellen helped
me to continue the Chickasaw County GenWebpages until I could find
Jackie Rhodes. I could not handle both editor of CHICKASAW TIMES PAST
and a genweb site, but I think they go together like history buffs and
geneologists. Let me tell all-I DO APPRECIATE AND LOVE JACKIE RHODES
FOR ALL HER HARD WORK. Don't want to leave out those Calhoun County
folks--Thank you Rose and Tommy. I have never voted. I can, but I never
think I know enough about the rules to cast a vote and I tell my
students you do have to follow rules. And I suppose that is where
we are now with genweb. Good luck to everyone.
Kay Y. Griffin of Chickasaw County
