Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Gang,
As ALWAYS here at MSGW CC's are allowed to put their county pages, etc wherever they want. THAT will NOT change.
But For one moment, lets look at something. OK?
Look at what Rootsweb (not Ancestry.com or MyFamily.com but ROOTSWEB) has done for the Project in the last few years.
1. Free unlimited space
2. Free Mailing Lists
3. GenConnect Boards
Lets not jump up and automatically Negate all this by assuming that this is the WORSE thing that could happen.
Rest assured I am watching very closely and the minute I think MSGW is in any danger or that it is not in the best interest of MSGW to stay on RW servers. I will sound a LOUD alarm. As SC I will never leave the CC's hanging in any situation that is NOT in the Best interest of all concerned.
I will ALWAYS believe in the Vision of USGW and MSGW and will fight to keep it alive!

I am a subscriber of ancestry.com and have a myfamily website. I wanted to
send this to the list it is part of the letter that ancestry.com sent out
today:
"RootsWeb.com fits well with the MyFamily.com vision of creating the
largest and
most active online resource for families and family history research,"
said Dr.
Brian Leverich, founder of RootsWeb.com. "This agreement will expand the
number
of RootsWeb.com users and content contributors. At the same time, we have
ensured that RootsWeb.com content, services, mailing lists, and Web pages
will
remain free, while allowing the site to provide more functionality and
resources
to a larger audience as a result of our being part of the MyFamily.com
network."
Ancestry.com, part of the MyFamily.com network, has a seventeen-year
history of
publishing award-winning books, magazines, and CDs, and currently offers
more
than 600 million records and over 2,500 databases. More than half of the
data is
freely accessible to all Web users. Ancestry.com also hosts, free of
charge, the
Ancestry World Tree and Online Family Tree software, which allow users to
connect and collaborate with other researchers who are working on the same
lines. Ancestry.com users retain ownership of their data, and the company
pledges never to charge for access to that data or to publish it. For
those who
prefer to keep their information a little closer to home, sister site
MyFamily.com allows users to create free, private sites that can be used
to post
family history data, share news and photos with family, chat online, and
much
more
RootsWeb.com is a valuable resource for family historians, with interactive
guides, discussion lists, and numerous tools for tracing one's ancestry; it
hosts more than 17,000 independently authored Web sites and about 19,000
mailing
lists. All of these services will remain free to users.

I agree that "wait and see" is the most prudent move. Linda,
once again, you are doing a superior job of remaining
thoughtful and businesslike during a challenge. We are
indeed fortunate to have you as our SC.
Keely
I don't think there is a written agreement in the form of a signed
document. I asked for details last year, but didn't get too much. I
wasn't terribly concerned, because Brian has proven himself to be
trustworthy. But there is an agreement, regardless of how formal/informal
it is, and I always felt the membership had a right to know everything -
especially now.
If you read my position statement, you'll know I don't think there is a
problem, and I hope everyone doesn't over-react. I think everyone is safe
in what they have online, at least for the time being, and I would
encourage everyone to continue updating pages, etc.
However, this is all my personal opinion, as I have no crystal ball. So
you should, of course, make the decision for yourself. :-)

Thank you, Ellen, your page is well stated and presented. I am in
agreement, we should continue to operate and do "our thing" until we
actually have reason not to.
Please, let's not have a "knee-jerk" reaction until someone actually stomps
on our feet.

Gang,
I don't know what is going on at this point other than what I sent this am and what is coming across lists. Mostly it's questions at this point because this was a shock to most of us, at least this SC. While I understand that it cost money to run all the bandwidth etc, that is used to run all the free stuff that RW offers, and I have never had any complaint against Rootsweb. I am nervous about Ancestry.com/My Family.
At this point, I say we take a "wait and see attitude" and if it appears at a later date that this merger will ADVERSELY affect USGW or MSGW in ANY way. Then WE as a State will make a decision on what we want to do. I will be watching closely AND asking questions. I want you all to do the same.

I went back and down loaded the file that had my query in it ...after going
into the file further... it was submitted by some one in a Ged. file.....
they had used it as the source of where they had gotten the name of their
gggrandfather who was mine also....I wasn't even contacted by this person
and know nothing about it.
But when I first seen it I was mad as an old wet hen..lol..
This merger has me really concern about the information that we ALL have
worked very hard to house at rootsweb and the fact that we have given
rootsweb a lot of control over this information ( now located with a server
that they No long own. )
Bobbie
Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but does the USGW have a written contract
with RW and do we (USGW) have something in writing from this merger team
stating they will honor and renew this agreement?
Business is business and we know that the bottom line drives everything in
todays business world. I don't see any advantage to family.com to enter
into this 'free' genealogy service unless it is to take 'it' over.
Sorry for the lack of enthusiasm for this merger but I feel a little bit
negative about the whole thing.
If I'm the only CC that feels this way I will shut up and watch. I may
not update my site for awhile, however.

More good news: Nothing will change for you, no one is going to

Everything you're used to using will still be here: the 19,000

databases,
the interactive learning guides, the weekly RootsWeb Review and
Missing Links, the numerous tools for tracing your family
history, the
tens of thousands of message boards, the thousands of
independently
authored web sites. RootsWeb will still support worthy genealogy
projects and societies, such as the USGenWeb Project
(www.USGenWeb.org), the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild
(ISTG.rootsweb.com) and the FreeBMD Project
(FreeBMD.rootsweb.com),
and other groups that provide free genealogical resources.
And don't worry, you won't be charged to access RootsWeb. No one
will put your data on CD without your permission. Our Privacy
Policy
(http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/pledge.html) and our Acceptable

Other promises made over the years will continue to be honored.
You'll
still deal with the same RootsWeb volunteers and employees. In
fact, most users won't notice any changes, except exciting new

more content, and better genealogical resources.

Forwarded with permission:
Dear fellow project members,
I've been reading the various press releases concerning the recent buyout
of Rootsweb.com, Inc. by Ancestry.com/MyFamily.com, as well as all the
various member comments concerning the acquisition. It occurs to me that
we simply do not know how this affects the USGenWeb Project, since the
terms of the buyout are not public.
Folks, this is why we have a Board and a National Coordinator. It would,
at this time, behoove our NC to contact both the heads of MyFamily.com and
RootsWeb.com, Inc. and ask them to spell out specifically how this buyout
will affect the USGenWeb Project now and in the future. And then he
should share that information with the rest of us so that those of us that
house our pages on RW/Ancestry [and this includes the national level
pages] may make an informed decision as to whether or not we wish to
remain there.
Some things he might want to ask:
Did Ancestry.com/MyFamily.com acquire _any_ of the USGW domains?
Will USGW members ever be required to put advertisements on their pages?
Will the Archives be required to post ads on its pages?
Does this buyout affect ownership of any material on any USGW pages,
including county pages, state pages, the archives?
Is USGW and/or any of its components and members free to leave
RW/Ancestry at any time?
I am sure that most of us would like to know the answer to these and many
other questions quickly.
Sincerely,
-Teresa Lindquist
