Everyone is frustrated when the 'ole HTTP 404 error comes up. It is a
totally non-descriptive error which doesn't say anything about the possible
causes of the trouble. When you see HTTP 404 please think about the
following, then try again later.
To get a page off the internet, anybody's page, a free page such as the US
Gen Web site, or a subscription site page such as you might expect from a
subscription to Ancestry.com's Census Database, that page must come off a
computer (called a server) and pass through many other computers (servers,
routers, etc.) sometimes criss-crossing the USA enroute to your trusty
computer! Any breakdowns along the way may cause that dreadful 404 message.
The longer the error lasts the bigger the chance it is serious problem but
most don't last long. Sometimes websites have to go down for maintenance,
and few annouce it in advance. Come to think of it, who would they announce
it to? Anyway, just realize that a few HTTP 404 error pages are the price
you pay for a "free" internet.
