Just to widen the scope of what kind of industry a fireman could work in,
I have several firemen (not in Wales though) working in the glass works in
county Durham.
I doubt if it would apply to this scenario but thought I would add it so
that you can see the term
could apply to several industries.
I would google a history search of the town/village and see who were the
major employees to
help narrow it down and also see what kind of jobs the neighbours were
doing.

Forgot to say - someone who looked after the fireboxes in the static
steam
engines or forges in a mine or ironworks was usually called a stoker.
