This Thursday, May 8th, Blaenau Gwent Libraries are offering you the
chance to experience the life and times of a 17th century barber-
surgeon. Roger Morgan presents the lecture, as one of his many alter
egos, this time Obadiah Hackett. The venue is at Brynmawr Library at
7.30pm.
During that period the barber-surgeon would shave you, cut your hair,
pull your teeth, amputate limbs, all without the aid of anaesthetic...
well the teeth and limb part anyway;)
Roger created this character back in the mid '90's when the 'living
history' group, The Chepstowe Garrison was formed. Roger is extremely
funny and convincing in all his portrayals, even the 'Battle of Rourkes
Drift'. I booked Roger for Merthyr Library when Wales played Italy at
Rugby earlier this year. He was dressed as a Roman Doctor, aptly for the
occasion. His name was Maximus Festus Septimus. He went out into Merthyr
town with his Roman garments, shield and sword on that Saturday morning
and crowds followed him into the library.
His practical demonstrations as both doctors are hilarious. Audience
participation is encouraged of course:))
