Hi Geoff
It looks as if you have examples of Welsh patronymic naming here. I hadn't
realized it went on so late in Monmouthshire although in some counties like
Caernarvonshire it was still going strong in the mid 19th century.
Basically, if the father's *forename* was Robert the children would have the
surname Roberts (or sometimes Probert, short for ap Robert). My wife has
examples of this in her family, her great grandfather was Richard Griffiths,
*his* father was Griffith Richards or Prichard, his father was Richard .....
and so on.
Hope that helps
David in Hertford, England

Hi
Help needed in understanding the Magor christening information on
FamilySearch.
Normally a register entry will show one of the parents having the same
surname as the child. For example a child Charles Jones might have
parents
shown as John Jones with wife shown as Anne if the parents are
married and
the child is legitimate. Alternately the parents might be shown as John
Smith and Anne Jones if the child is illegitimate or just Anne Jones with
no
father stated. But in the case of illegitimacy I think that I've
always
seen the mother's surname given.
However some of the entries in the IGI for Magor do not seem to follow
this
pattern. The batch number is C085691 therefore they are not Patron
entries.
In all these cases the child's surname seems to be different to
the
father's
surname. For example:
25 Dec 1758 - Margaret Roberts, father Robert Hughes
25 Feb 1794 - Charles Roberts, father Robert Thomas, mother Margaret
2 Jan 1807 - Elizabeth Roberts, father Robert Jones, mother Elizabeth
14 June 1807 - Hannah Roberts, father Robert Charlton, mother Iddy
4 June 1810 - Rachel Roberts, father Robert Jones, mother Elizabeth
8 July 1811 - Uriah Roberts, father Robert Charlton, mother Iddy
The person that I am interested in is in the last example (Uriah Roberts).
Is his father named Robert Charlton or Robert Charlton Roberts? Any help
would be appreciated.
Geoff
