I have searched in vain through the GRO indexes for the marriage entry of
James PETTITT, b. 1818, Hethersett, Norfolk to Rachel JONES, b. abt. 1828,
Abercarn, Monmouthshire. Their first (known about) child was born 1858 in
Usk, Monmouthshire.
James was a serving soldier in the 57th regiment of foot (and so probably
fought in the Crimea) and became a Policeman in the Monmouthshire
Constabulary after he left the army - I think it unlikely that they were
never married since that would have been an impediment to being a Policeman
(unless he managed to successfully lie about it).
I was wondering if perhaps he married while a serving soldier. Are there
separate marriage records for serving servicemen? If so, where do I find
them?
Anyone know?
Thanks
