Hello,
I'm very new to both the MonmouthshireGwent and the MONMOUTHSHIRE lists,
and a bit confused about the difference in coverage and emphasis between
these two lists, so pardon me if my question appears on the incorrect
list.
I have a question you may be able to help me with. There was a Captain
DANDO in Newport in the 1840's and 1850's. He operated one of the Usk
Steamers that plied the waters between Newport and Bristol. He was at it
in 1847/8 per the Newport 1848 City Directory and still at it in 1852
when he ungloriously ended up with his steamer
stuck in the mud at the mouth of the Usk on Christmas Day with holiday
passengers on board.
What I'd like to know is his given name and any particulars you may have
on where he fits in to the Dando family. I could not find him in the 1841
census of Newport nor in part two of the 1851 census of Newport.
Kind regards,
Dave Axe
