Hello,
I would greatly appreciated any help or advice in trying to discover more about my elusive
family. I'm looking for the death of my ancestor JOHN WILLIAMS. They have been very
elusive because the family disappeared after the birth of their second child (Isabella) in
Devon in 1833. Many years later, John's widow MARY and her married daughter ELIZA (my
GGG Grandmother) turn up living in Newport Wales (1851 census). Unfortunately with such a
common surname a great deal of time spent searching the 1841 census has failed to find
them. I recently found an exciting bit of information though from the Kelly's
directory of 1848. I knew that in Devon John was a boat builder by trade and there is a
boat builder living in or very near to Pillgwennlly (at Baldwin Street) by the same name!
When John's daughter Eliza (my ancestor) married in Newport, she was recorded as being
'of Pill'. So it may be very likely that this is my ancestor and that he died
sometime between this year of 1848 and the census of 1851 where we find his wife Mary
widowed.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar at all with this area of the world (I'm from
Australia) but from searching on the internet it seems I have three possible churches as
places of burial?
HOLY TRINITY (not built until that year of 1848)
ST STEPHENS
ST PAULS (?St Woollas)
Does anyone know how I might access these records to discover if there is a burial entry
for him? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated,
Thank you,
Tamara.
