Hi ALL
I quite agree with Mike, I live in England and visit my family in Cwmbran and visit the
Records Office when there. but that will have to stop if it moves to Ebbw Vale. being in
my 60's the cost will be to much with the price of petrol going up. why as know one
mentioned this before.

Thanks Ann
Yes this is a disgraceful cynical move by the Labour administration to chuck
everything but the kitchen sink into Ebbw Vale, only months away from the
General Election to try and win the seat back from the independants. The
records office should not be part of this project, yes regenerate Ebbw Vale
as well as the rest of Gwent, I also agree about placing a family & local
history centre in the area, but the redeployment of the records office
should be about accessability and fairness, placing the records office in
Ebbw Vale discriminates against the vast majority of the people of Gwent as
well as people travelling from outside, It will mean an extra hour - 2 hours
travelling and higher costs getting there. In a time of the worst economic
crisis in history and climate change, how can it be right to make people pay
more and travel further to view their history. the vast amount of records
held in Monmouthshire fall in the areas that will have to travel the
furthest.
There as been no public consultation amongst the users who visit the records
on a regular basis, not only are the users against this move but all the
staff are as well, mainly because they all live in the Cwmbran area. There
as only been a few of us who have actually voiced our concerns about this
move, what I am suprised about is the lack of discussion and oposition from
the Gwent Family History Society, Newport, Chepstow & Monmouth branch I
would have thought would have been totally opposed to this move, their
members in Pontypool will also have to travel further.
When County hall is pulled down they will be building new council offices in
Cwmbran & Usk to rehouse Torfaen & Monmouth council, why was'nt
Cwmbran
considered as an option, it is fair for everyone ,it as a bus station second
only in size to Newport, a railway station which links to the north and is
much closer to Newport than Ebbw Vale is, and is also closer to the M4.

- Ebbw Vale, Wales Landmark Could Be Family History Centre
A Valleys landmark is set to be transformed into a £12 million family
history and genealogy visitor centre. Plans to refurbish the historic
General Offices at the former Ebbw Vale steelworks into a top historical
visitor's attraction will include the relocation of the Gwent Records
Office, which has one of the largest archives in Wales.
The priceless collection, which covers five kilometres of shelving at
its current home in Cwmbran, has records dating back to the 1300s and
will form the cornerstone of the unique history and genealogy centre.
