If Elizabeth's father was in trade and paid for an entry in the local trade
directory it is likely to give the house number in the street. Trade
directories should be available at the local County Record Office, which is
likely to be Gwent Record Office. Maybe a group member with local access
can help if you could add father's name and trade.

I know from her birth certificate that my Great Grandmother Elizabeth
Harriet CHRISTELOW was born in Drybridge Street, Monmouth on 9th April
1878. They were only 'passing through' and I have no idea how long they
were there, but I do know they were in Swansea by the 1881 census. What I
would have loved to have known was which house she was born in, as a lot
of the old houses remain on this street. Has anyone any ideas how this
might be done?

Dear Kirk,
Two possible approaches occur to me:
1. Search a contemporary trades directory. Many 19th-century directories
can be searched on-line at the University of Leicester website at
www.historicaldirectories.org/ Some of these publications included street
directories, in which case you could look for Drybridge Street. Failing
that, as you know from the birth certificate Elizabeth's father's
occupation, you could search the trades directory section.
2. Try to find out who owned the property or properties in Drybridge
Street in the 1870s. If your family owned the house, they should be listed
in land tax records and/or rate books, recording property owners, and in
some cases, the occupiers.
The Gwent Record Office at Cwmbran should be able to tell you whether such
records exist for Drybridge Street.
Good luck with your searches,
John
