Is anyone else researching Isaac Newton and his family . He came from Portbury but moved around England as a labourer . He married Gertrude Rowland in Derbyshire and in 1891 was in Machen upper . with his wife ,children and mother-in-law. Susannah Rowland. Susannah was the 2nd wife of Henry Rowland from South Brent Devon..In 1891 he was a lodger in Newport whilst Susannah was in Machen .I cannot find a marriage for Henry and Susannah. I assume it was between the death of his 1st wife in 1856 and birth of Gertrude in 1860..i've seen research on ancestry where one researcher has a maiden name of Collins for Susannah but have had no replies to my queries . Are there any Newton researchers that can help . i believe some still live in newport Gill caddy
Hi Mike
Thank You so much for letting me know this sad news. I do not have
that many there and had no problem finding Walter James Ellaway but
suspect the 2 girls are together, after the death of their Mom in 1859.
Rosa / Rose is my main problem but will have to find another way.
Info much appreciated. Lorraine Ottawa, Canada

Hello
I would appreciate any ideas in trying to find the 2 girls above on the
1861 census.
They were both on the 1851 census in Bristol living with their mother,
Ellen ELLAWAY. They must have gone to Wales between the 1851
and 1861 census as Ellen Ellaway died in Newport in Sept. 1859 so
both their parents were deceased.
Laura was born abt. 1840 and Rosa / Rose b. in 1845 and I suspect
both b. in Bristol. I have the marriage cert for Laura and she married
John SAMPSON on Dec. 15, 1864 at the Registry Office in Cardiff.
On the marriage, Laura is age 22 (should be 24) and she is working as
a housemaid on Newport Road, Cardiff. The last sighting of her was
when John Sampson was a witness at the marriage of Laura's brother,
Walter James Ellaway in July 1871 in Aberdare.
There is a chance that they could be using the name JEFFERIES from
their mother's 2nd husband and that could have been Rosa / Rose's
birth name which I am checking out. The other night I tried the 1861
census on Ancestry.uk under all the 3 surnames plus Elway and other
spellings.
Any ideas in locating them in 1861 would be wonderful.

Pictures of: Carreg Cennen Castle (CMN); and the Severn Bridge (MON/GLS)
Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, just uploaded onto my
website, include:
1. The historic Carreg Cennen Castle, near Ammanford in the county of
Carmarthenshire (twelve pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images
of Wales' in June 1999.
2. The beautiful (and functional) suspension bridge, which provided the
first road link across the Severn Estuary between England and Wales (four
pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in December
1997.
As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at

Hi
I have been photographing the tithe apportionments for all
Monmouthshire parishes over the past couple of months, I
started doing the maps as well, but because they are A2 in
size and also laminated I gave up due to light problems, it was
like photographing a mirror on some bright days.
The tithes were introduced in 1836 and ended in 1844, the
apportionments and maps only cover rural parishes and rural
areas in parishes that also have large towns, they list all owners
of land and property and also all the occupiers of both, you
will not find any listings of people who lived in towns such as
Abergavenny, Chepstow, Monmouth, Newport and other towns
in the county.
The maps can be photocopied at Newport reference library
and whole parish maps can cost between £1 - £20, there are
also copies of these maps and apportionments at the county
records office and the National Library.
This project is ongoing and so is my project to include all the
parish records, nonconformist and church records to my website
where people can enjoy researching their family history for FREE.
I also have over 1600 Monmouthshire Wills and many other
photographed documents to add to my website. My aim is to be
the No1 family history centre for discussion and research in
Monmouthshire.
Members of my Yahoo Monmouthshire FH group have been
photographing all the gravestones in the parish churchyards, these
will be added to my site. If you live in or near Monmouthshire
why dont you lend a hand.

Dear Mike
OK, thanks. I notice that you dont have a picture of Wyesham Church on your
site - would you like a picture of it to add to the collection? Its just
three doors away from me so its no problem at all.

Looking at the census Lucas is not a common surname in
Wales at all, with only around 200 - 300 individuals in the
whole county for any given census. In England it is between
9 - 12 thousand spread all over the country.
The Lucas family of the Gower you mention were landed
gentry and were connected to the Lucas family of East Anglia.
The surname in Wales is concentrated in the mid and the south
eastern counties.
I have a Will on my website of a William Lucas of Cwmcarvan
Monmouthshire dated 1675.

Thats kind of you, would you like to have your own webpage on my site
of photographs you care to take for family history purposes.
I will acknowledge that the photos belong and are copyrighted to yourself.
unless you have a website of your own of course. which I could link too.

Dear Chris
LUCAS is not a common name in these parts I don't think, but I believe LUCAS
was quite a common name down the Gower - I wonder if they travelled along
the coast at some point?

If anyone needs a photograph of a building in Monmouth/Raglan/Usk area for
genealogical reasons, as long as they are able to give me a fairly accurate
location I am willing to take pictures from them. I appreciate that it is
lovely to see actal buildings where ancesters live, but if you live a great
distance away then that it may be impossible.

Hi All,
I am only new to the list and am researching my Great Great Grandfather that was Transported to Tasmania in 1831, he was one of three that was Convicted of Highway Robbery at Monmouth Assizes Court. The three are William Lucas, Isaac Pritchard and David Edmunds.
My 2x Greta Grandfather was William Lucas born Usk 1812, this parents were Thomas And Margaret Lucas nee Williams they were married Raglan 1800 and they had the following children baptisms
Ann 28 Apr 1801 Usk
Thomas 21 Mar 1803 Usk
Mary 3 Feb 1805 Usk
William 26 Oct 1806 Usk Died 16 Aug 1809
James 11 Dec 1808 Usk
Elizabeth 6 Apr 1810 Usk
William 4 Oct 1812 LLanbaddock
Blandford 17 Feb 1814 Usk
Marilla 4 Aug 1816 Usk
William married a Mary Anderson in Hobartown in 1851 and in 1852 came to Victoria where they had 9 children.
I was wondering if there is some else who is researching the same family I am and are interested in making contact and they might be able to help with more information about the Family. Or might be connected to either Isaac or David that could help me.
Look forward to hearing from anyone.
