Hello and welcome Ann.
My main interests in the Monmouthshire/Gwent area are:
WOOD and HASSELL
My GGF James Alfred HASSELL was actually born in West Bromwich,
Staffordshire and moved to Bristol prior to 1885. He married Alice
Louisa JONES (b 1864 in Nailsea, Yatton, Somerset) in Bristol in 1885.
My grandmother, Louisa Jones HASSELL was born in Bristol in 1893 and the
family moved to Pontypool area when she was about 8. Louisa married
Ernest WOOD (b 1890, Wellington, Somerset) in 1910. Family stayed in
the Pontypool area.
Any leads most welcome.

Hi Ann,
Many thanks for taking on the List Admin.
My interest in Monmouthshire is in the PURDELL family, which also
appears as PERDEL/PURDEL and even as PURNELL! The family came to
Monmouthshire from Somerset c1849. William Purdell married Maria Brain
in 1st quarter 1985, registered in Risca, and they were enumerated in
1851 in Machen/Mynyddislwyn.
My great grandmother Elizabeth Maria Purdell was born in 1st quarter
1851 in Machen, but I can't find a birth entry in the GRO Index - maybe
some kind soul can point me at a baptismal record for her. Maria died in
1st quarter 1855, and her death is recorded on the same page of the GRO
Index as her brother-in-law James Purdell, while an infant William
Purdell is recorded on the next page - maybe there is a story behind
these deaths that was reported in the local paper - again, I'm in need
of sks to point me in the direction of likely records.

Hello Mal
Dont think I can help at the mo I'm afraid.
I only have one Herbert in my family so far and she is Sarah Herbert born in
Paulton Wilts in 1821. She was married twice, first to Robert Traisher
Croome who died very young, and then secondly to John Colwell (my ancestor)
from Painswick, Glost. John appears to have been a relatives servant.
Both the Herbert's and the Skidmore names have some prominence in South
Wales. I understand the Herbert's were big fish in the Britton Ferry area
(where Sarah's grandson moved to) and the Skidmores I understand, helped
hide Owain Glyndwr in his later years.
Sorry not to be of more help

To All,
I'm new to this list and researching my ggranfather's line of Whitnum. According to the 1861 Census he was born in Caerleon on 4 May 1825. His name is Samuel and he married Charlotte Biggs (b.1823 Welshpool, Montgomeryshire d.1873 Brooklyn, NY) in 1843 in Worcestershire, ENG. On their marriage certificate is shows his father's name as Samuel also and his occupation was tin man. I was wondering what tin works might be in the Caerleon area where he would have worked. Anyone have any info? Is anyone else researching this line?
Thanks In Advance,

Hello Ann
Thanks for the advice. Decisions decisions eh? I will sign to the Gwent one
for now and see how it goes. Perhaps they have the meetings in the evenings
and I will be able to attend a few and learn a little. If all goes well
maybe I'll try Glamorgan too at some point.

Hello Everyone.I am researching HAWKINS from Dock Cottages-South Market St
and Aston Cres.My grandfather was George and his father was Joseph Hawkins
originally from Old Sodbury Glos.Joseph was married to Sarah Cutter from
Bristol and they had children ,Alice,[a pupil teacher]
Emily,George,Thomas,Albert and Nelson, also twin daughters who died in
infancy Mabel and Edith.Joseph died at 23,Woodland Rd Newport aged 80yrs in
1929 and his son Albert was the informant.I have never been able to find any
relatives in the Newport area who may be able to help with our family
information so any snippet no matter how small would be greatly
appreciated.Suzanne,Newport,Gwent
Just a quick reminder to everyone that this is the time of year when
membership of family history societies needs to be renewed.
Family history societies have paved the way for the explosion of information
that is on the internet today. Without the assistance of just about every FH
society in Great Britain the 1881 census would not have been indexed and
made available in so many different formats yet. (the LDS church would have
completed it eventually but it would have taken a lot longer than the ten
years it did take.)
I believe that membership of at least one FH society is one of the best
things a family historian can do. Join the Society that covers the area your
ancestor came from and you can learn so much more than just the plain facts
given in a census or on a certificate. Join a society close to where you
live and you can take advantage of their research facilities and pick the
brains of other members for different approaches to that brick wall.
Most societies are beginning to see that the internet can work for them and
they are setting up websites with members only pages to give their members
something else for their membership fee.
So there we are, my new year advice to everyone is to join at least one FH
society and if you are a member then make sure you renew your membership.
Happy New Year
Ann Macey

Shw Mae,
Searching for Hannah JARRET and Hannah COSLET. On 23 September 1816,
Edward EVANS, a widower, married Hannah JARRET, a widow, at Risca,
Monmouth, Wales. In 1851, one of their sons, Thomas EVANS, age 30, was
living with a stepbrother James JARRET, age 37.
I am trying to learn whether or not COSLET was Hannah JARRET'S maiden
name or if Hannah COSLET was Edward EVANS' previous wife.
I would appreciate any information.
