Dear List,
After viewing the 1851 census for Llanhilleth, I have been able to establish that the
Edmund Davies and Mary Rosser married in Llanhilleth in 1835 are not the parents of my
Margaret Davies (daughter of Edmund Davies, Clockmaker) who was married in Llanhilleth in
1860. However, an Edmund Davies, bachelor of Llanhilleth was married by licence to an Ann
Morgan, spinster of Cowbridge (Glam.) in Cowbridge parish church on 6th August 1829. These
could be the parents of my Margaret as it's likely that they went to live in
Llanhilleth (the groom's home parish) after marrying in the bride's home parish as
was the custom. Unfortunately, only the allegation for this marriage survives which
doesn't show the groom's occupation (this is usually on the bond) so I can't
confirm if this Edmund was a clockmaker, although now that I have ruled the other Edmund
it seems quite likely.
Best wishes
James Phillips-Evans
