Greetings from a newcomer to the Monmouthshire list
My maternal grandmother, Mary Annie Laura BLACKMORE, was born in Bath in 1865. Her parents
were William Blackmore and Maria STAWELL, also from Bath.
In 1881 Mary is in service in Newport, Mon.(Servant with Sisters of Mercy, Victoria Place,
Newport, Mon.), with her mother (born 1846), sister Maud (aged 5), and brother Arthur - 12
- (both born in Newport) living 'up the road' in Christchurch (14 Lord St). Father
William (born abt. 1841) is not with them, possibly still in Bath.
He is variously described as 'Porter', 'Auctioneer's porter',
'Broker's porter', or even 'Auctioneer'. At some stage my brother
found a 'William Blackmore, Auctioneer' advertised in a Trade Directory for
Newport, but he cannot remember where or when!
If anyone could help with tracing this Directory entry, or could check to see if any of
the family were in Newport or CHristchurch in 1871 I would be very grateful.
(Any BLACKMORE's or STAWELL's who are in Monmouth could be a clue)
Hopefully!
