Shw Mae!
I am new to the List.
My many years of research now depend on the 1871 Census to confirm that my
great grandmother Isabella ABBOTT (nee Rutherford) was born in Edinburgh and
not Paisley.
She married Peter ABBOTT, who was a regular soldier from Preston, Lancashire
on 24.8.1869 at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Stow Hill, Newport. His address is
shown as Barracks, Newport and her as Boneswell, Newport.
On the 1881 Census in Preston her place of birth is shown as Edinburgh and I
have spent many years researching the Rutherfords there. To my dismay, the
1901 Census shows her as being born in Paisley.
My only hope to confirm her correct place of birth is the 1871 Census. I am
hoping she still lived in Newport then, before he was posted to Ireland.
Their first son William Abbott is shown as being born in Fermanagh in 1871.
I sent for a certificate but they can't find him. I have found 2 William
ABBOTTS born in Newport in the Sept. Qtr. 1871 and December Qtr. 1871 and I
am hoping one of them is the son of Peter Abbott and Isabella.
I am wondering if SKS, who has access to the 1871 Census for Newport, would
be kind enough to check if Peter ABBOTT and Isabella lived there then, and
also someone with access to the Roman Catholic Records for St. Mary's, Stow
Hill, would check if there are any baptisms in 1871/72 for William ABBOTT.
If they are found and it shows Isabella being born in Edinburgh, it would
mean that all my research would not have been in vain.
Diolch yn Fawr,
Anne in Bolton.
