Dear Anne
Many thanks for your info about JAMES in Chepstow.
When I investigated the marriage of Ebenezer JONES to a Mary from Chepstow I
found that his wife was actually ATKINS, not JAMES, and a whole theory came
tumbling down! So I am no longer looking for the Chepstow Jameses.
However, a William James and a Mary James signed as witnesses at the
marriage in Chepstow of my great-grandparents William MORGAN and Emily
HOLLAND in 1871. I think I found in the 1871 census that a William JAMES was
parish clerk. Another more elderly William was a publican, like Emily
Holland's father, so it could have been either. I didn't find Mary either
then or in earlier censuses.
Thanks again
Regards
David
