This is a bit off-topic, but it does concern my ancestors, both in Wales and
Ireland, and you are the only people of my acquaintance who might have
some insight into this question.
According to the history I have read, the birth name of the man popularly
known as St. Patrick (the bishop who evangelized Ireland) was Maewyn
Succat. His father's name was Calpurnius and his mother's name
Conchessa, and they lived (depending on which version of the story you
read) in western Britain, Scotland, or Wales. This would have been around
400 AD, plus or minus a hundred years.
To me, the name Maewyn just looks Welsh. I don't know much about
Scots Gaelic, but that "w" in the middle screams Welsh to me, based on
what I've seen of Welsh spelling. Of course, I'm an English-speaking
American, and I don't really know much about Welsh or Scots Gaelic, so I
thought I'd turn to the list. Can anybody give me any guidance here?
Thanks.
