Dear Jocelyn,
From Inns & Taverns of Chepstow & the Lower Wye Valley, by
Ivor Waters, I found George Hutchings mentioned as the landlord of the Berkeley Arms, in
Chepstow (1886-1911). There is a lovely picture in the book of a woman with what looks
like her four daughters standing outside the pub in 1902, when it was decorated for the
coronation of Edward V11. I can scan it and send you a copy if you like. A football club
was started in Chepstow in 1878. The headquarters moved several times but eventually ended
up at the Berkeley Arms "which George Hutchings made the sporting centre of the
district". Chepstow Boxing Association was started by George Hutchings in November
1898 at the Berkeley Arms "as part of a campaign for physical fitness which lasted
until the outbreak of war in 1914." In 1899, George Hutchings jnr was a boxer. Hope
this is helpful.
