Hello James
When Gwent FHS issued their index for 1861 MON, they also included details of the
missing books/pages/individuals. For the piece Bedwellty, Aberystruth SD - including
Nantyglo and Ebbw Vale - there were 4739 people missing from a total population of
16,055.
In Tredegar SD - which includes the rest of Ebbw Vale and Rumney - they estimate a total
of 6,267 missing individuals from a population of 28,548.
I only have the indexes, but there is no Mary MORRIS aged 53.

Roughly how much is missing from the Monmouthshire 1861 census? I
vaguely remember reading somewhere the number of completed returns
that were lost/destroyed but cannot recall where. I know that I have
been unable to find many of my Monmouthshire ancestors among the
surviving records but I have been lucky with one or two others. I have
not previously checked the 1861 index for one family line that I am
currently working on, viz. Mary MORRIS, widow in 1861, aged circa 53,
born in Cardigan[shire?] and who lived in the Ebbw
Vale/Nantyglo/Rhymney areas and wonder if there is a chance that she
may appear in the existing records. Failing that, I hope that she
lived on until the time of the 1871 census as I need confirmation of
her exact birthplace.
Best wishes for the New Year
